My laptop's intermittent screen fault has cropped up again so I've had a look for possible causes/easy fixes and I'm going to try those before taking it to anyone to be fixed after last time when it magically started working again the moment it got through their door *sighs*
It had to happen over SDCC weekend though didn't it? *kicks things*
Our exhibition at work is finally open though so today is a bit quieter and I'm going to try and get some short reviews done today in breaks/times when I'm waiting for the damn database to load. Starting at 10am let's see when/if I post this.
These are all horribly late reviews and therefore brief.
King John (Shakespeare's Globe) @ Temple Church
This had that classic problem of someone getting terribly excited about a venue without really thinking about how it would work and so whilst it was VERY cool seeing King John in the Temple Church surrounded by the effigies of dead Crusaders- especially at the start when we entered the candlelit church past the body of Richard I lying in state amidst all these effigies- the whole thing became rather more annoying when you realised that with unassigned seating some of us had paid a lot for some pretty restricted views which annoyed me quite a lot.
It was a good production otherwise, I mean somewhat (very) weird having watch Alex Waldmann as John in the RSC production to see him as the Bastard here but he made a brilliant Bastard (though I do think the whole production suffered a bit in my eyes because I couldn't stop comparing!)
Barbara Marten was fantastic as Eleanor and I did spend a fair bit of time just wanting to watch her face off against Tanya Moodie's Constance and Aruhan Galieva's Blanche, the ladies were very strong here. Interestingly at this distance (3 months) I can remember almost nothing about John himself which probably says something.
I think eventually this production will fade to its setting and Alex Waldmann & Barbara Marten in my mind. If I'd reviewed it maybe I'd have been more positive but I doubt it. Iread a lot of reviews when it made it to the Globe where people were very positive so maybe my bad view was the problem? Just not a great success I'd say.
Then we jump forwards a couple of months to High Society... no. I want to talk about that properly because I have many thoughts about it and the film so it can wait a little. After that it was Bugsy <3
Bugsy Malone @ Lyric Hammersmith
New theatre alert! (Turns out there are two theatres in Hammersmith, who knew :-P)
I guess this was always bound to suffer a little with the film in the back of my mind BUT I had so much fun. It's such a silly show and the kids were all clearly having a whale of a time and yes there was an amount of overacting going on in some areas but then it's hardly the place for subtlety :-P I also was of the opinion that Fat Sam was doing it deliberately but some of my fellow theatergoers weren't so sure. Bugsy held it all together well though and had a lot of fun with some of the bigger scenes like the car chase.
I felt we had quite a weak Blousey, but she did get stronger as the show went on so it might have been nerves? As is so often the case with these things it was the tiniest actors who impressed me most, whichever kid it was we had playing Baby Face was an absolute star <3 I did also love Leroy.
Mostly though I loved the sets and the car chase with lots of strobe lights and the pie guns and the dancing OH the dancing was so good and the older kids in that cast had some real talent amongst them! And when they freestyled at the end it was so joyous.
Did remember a bit why going to kids shows can make me hate all children (the running commentary wasn't so helpful) but on the otherhand they were all engaged and watching.
Lot's of fun basically!
Well it's 5pm and two reviews is better than none? I've got six more to write to catch up (plus I realise I never said anything about either of the o2 concerts I went to this year)
I'll try and at least write about yesterday (aka the second time I've watched Katherine Parkinson act out a full seduction without ever touching the other actor <3) sooner rather than later!
