So... Avengers: Age of Ultron then?
I mean my thoughts are jumbled and uninformed by any knowledge of the comics but I want to talk about it.
... where to start?
(no seriously, this is the 3rd version of this post, the first was entirely incoherent and went round in circles, the second I attempted a structure and therefore wrote next to nothing let's see if this one actually gets to the "hit post" stage!)
Let's go with a few things I loved:
Paul Bettany generally
Ultron sounding like Tony 90% of the time (though it did make him a bit hard to take seriously)
Clint's family (though I want the names of his children... until we get them the boy's called Phil okay :-P)
Sam turning up
Peggy scene <3 (I will always show up for more Peggy Carter/Hayley Atwell)
Science!Bros montage
"Language" (I have a theory this is a thing Steve & Bucky said to each other)
The Maximoffs (got to love characters who reassess their situation with new information!
Actually to stop listing for a moment I loved the fact that Clint was the one who appeared able to deal with the Maximoffs at all because he saw them and found a way to protect himself from Wanda and his slightly offhand way of dealing with them was great because really they're kind of both way older than they look in experience but also had their childhood's vanish so Pietro in particular comes off very much as a teenager at points and I liked that Clint took the time to give Wanda a pep talk and I was actually really sad that Pietro died because I liked that back and forth and also because I loved his little conversation with Steve about SHIELD.
I mean don't get me wrong I'm glad Clint didn't die but I could have lived with more Pietro.
They were having fun with the CLINT WILL DIE foreshadowing weren't they? I mean I'd seen Renner talking about Cap3 a bit so I wasn't worried till he went back for that kid but still... Also I have totally read the "Clint secretly has children" fic a million times it's just that normally there isn't a wife to go with them ALSO I love that she's Auntie Nat especially after the conversation she has with Banner about the Red Room.
(incidentally I quite enjoyed a fair number of the Bruce/Natasha scenes BUT that scene? she explains how she can't have children because she was forcibly sterilised by the Red Room and then basically calls herself a monster and there are MANY reasons why Widow might be a monster but that? Not one of them and I guess maybe it's the one at that moment that hurts the most for her but IDK that I liked a scene that, to me, read as if it was saying "women who can't have children = monsters")
(the other thing I don't like about the Bruce/Natasha stuff is that Bruce is being, understandably perhaps, an absolute idiot and I am maybe getting a bit tired of his "I must run away to protect you" stuff although as I type this I'm actually wondering if he ran because she forced him to be the Hulk again when he was ready to leave? IDK I like that idea more)
The other thing that made me a bit what? was just that Tony is involved at all. I feel like the missed a sentence or two at the start somewhere explaining why at the end of IM3 it looked like Tony was pulling back and then there he was front and centre again. I mean presumably it's part "Thor asked" and part "I must protect the whole world with my AI" but it just felt a little weird and then of course he leaves at the end and is no longer an Avenger but... IDK the start and end of this film felt like they were missing some pieces. Was that Clint leaving the Avengers too?
I did quite enjoy seeing Tony & Steve face off and clearly demonstrate the faultlines in that relationship that could lead to Civil War. Also all the flirting *rolls eyes* so ridiculous boys.
Other little bits
Love Rhode-y, always the bridesmaid
Nice to have Maria get some good lines
Andy Serkis was having WAY too much fun (people tell me that character is Black Panther set up, I hope so)
Did Tony ever fix that tractor? *g*
Love that Nat & Steve are clearly still pretty tight and love even more that Sam was there at the end
We appear to have some form of SHIELD back, interesting to see how that plays out in the TV show
"Jane's better" <3 idiot boys.
Loved the hammer scene being a set up for the Vision stuff<333
I liked the Vision all round, I liked that he wasn't CGI for a start (hi Paul!) but the pay off of Thor's face when he handed him the hammer was great and a REALLY useful shorthand for "we can trust this guy" which might have seemed more stupid otherwise.
I read a review (Den of Geek maybe?) that said the film had too many fight/chase sequences and livened up when they started trying to save lives and I think I'm absolutely on board with that idea. The final big battle was brilliant because they were fighting and trying to evacuate whereas that opening scene was mostly a blur with some good one liners for me. I say this mostly to explain why I fear the whole Thanos overarching storyline just doesn't make me that excited because universe ending battles tend to just be battles... I mean I guess we'll see.
This review is kind of a mess again and I feel like I've missed out something huge but if I don't post it now I'll second guess myself again and never post it :-P
Come talk to me in the comments- tell me your thoughts!
