As my Saturday plans got cancelled at the last minute I've actually had a fairly quiet weekend.
(what I mean when I say that is that I watched a lot of TV, read a 600 page book and actually got enough sleep)
So some random TV thoughts...
I finally finished watching Cucumber, Banana and Tofu, it's been an interesting journey.
I mean I still haven't really forgiven it for not being Queer as Folk 3 because that would have been much better and in a way I guess that's what RTD was going for? I mean not quite but it was looking more at the middle-aged men rather than the younger guys as QaF did.
The problem was I only just barely warmed to Henry right at the end and, to be honest, I didn't really warm to Lance either (which didn't make his death any less horrible) so I was interested but not emotionally engaged? That's not quite right though. There were moments I connected- when Henry, Freddie & Dean went out together for instance I liked that a lot but that's possibly because it felt more like QaF.
I could have done without the scene with hazel Tyler- RTD was always very good with the anvils though.
Actually what I found most interesting was RTD's interview on one of the Tofu episode where he actually said he just kept writing AIDs stories over and over (even though the big deaths in QaF and Cucumber weren't actually AIDs) and that apparently his next drama is going to be an actual AIDs story.
I did find Tofu interesting, I mean nothing new really but fairly interesting. Suffered from a limited number of view points of course so you got the old lines about bisexuality being a stepping stone etc. left very much unchallenged. Also the episode about not having sex did make me laugh- their virgin was all of 20ish wasn't she? SHOCKING *rolls eyes*
I did like that they included the cast though.
And I did like the Banana episodes but then little snippets like that are often easier to manage rather than an ongoing plot.
An interesting experiment I quite enjoyed is my verdict in the end. I think.
I've actually mostly been watching Indian Summer though I haven't quite caught up (two more episodes to watch including tonight's). Still not sure what it really is except very beautifully shot and the cause of Edward Hogg being on my TV screen <3
What else? OH
Bluestone 42!
You know when casts spoil an episode for you? Yeah... perils of twitter that I should be aware of but I was not at ALL expecting such a dramatic departure so they caught me unawares. I've been trying to convince my parents to watch it ASAP ever since but they're away so I thought I'd just watch it before I heard anything else.
No more Oliver Chris then, that's rather sad, and I'm not sure it was the greatest episode ever really but Matthew Lewis really impressed and I like every scene with Tower Block & Bird.
The book, incidentally, was Initiate's Trial which means I now have to WAIT for Janny Wurts to finish the next book in the Wars of Light & Shadow which is annoying because this is the first time I've actually caught up with her. She better bloody finish the series. Two books (theoretically) from the end!q
