I'm going to talk about Captain America: The Winter Soldier under a cut in a minute but first I just need to vent (again) about the utter hideousness of 3D films :-(

A friend on facebook, when I said how much I loathed 3D, said that some films use it well but to be honest, at this point, it's not a matter of whether they use it well or badly it's that it actually stops me being able to see the film properly! Every single fight scene became a flailing mass of limbs where either I couldn't separate individuals or I ended up having to shut my eyes because itw as making me feel dizzy! And that's before I get started on the fact that it left about 75% of the film slightly blurry to me!

Now of course we were very near the front and off to one side but someone has to sit in those seats and a kind of film that only looks good from a tiny fraction of seats, loses most of the gains in high definition film making and actually makes some people so ill they physically can't sit in the cinema (or just can't see 3D at all).

And then of course they charge more money for it. I just don't get the excitement filmmakers & directors seem to have for it :-/

But evidently other people do.

*takes a deep breath* Sorry about that. It just REALLY frustrates me and it's been a little while since I've even tried- we were doing the "3D & see it earlier avoiding spoilers" v. "2D but almost certainly get spoiled because it's a day later" dance and I'm still not sure which side is better.

ANYWAY

I LOVED the film, I really did <3 Despite all the 3D quibbles and despite the fact that there could have been SO MUCH MORE Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes in the film I really really enjoyed it.

I loved Steve and Natasha as friends and as colleagues. It was nice to see them working as a team with Cap clearly in charge (alternate missions aside) and the way that team clearly knew each other well enough to work like that (later developments aside *g*) AND I was hugely amused by her determination to set him up whilst simultaneously being OH SO GLAD that there wasn't actually a romance in the film.

Falcon was BRILLIANT too (nb. I'm not a comics person- my knowledge is from the films & then chatting to fannish people). It's so nice having some in the film who actually appears to be a functioning human being outside the superhero-ing and I loved the introduction "on your left" and how matter of factly he accepted Steve Rogers as a friend and the "I do what he does but slower" line <3

I think one of my favourite things about the film was showing the way that Steve Rogers/Captain America inspires loyalty in other people because he will fight for you to the end of the line (sob) and so other people respond to that and Natasha trusts him and Fury trusts him (kinda) and Falcon follows him and the Winter Soldier falters but mostly that tech wouldn't launch the ships (he died didn't he? or at least he got shot :-( he was awesome)

I am SUPER excited to see the ramifications of the film's plot on future Marvel films and, more immediately, on Agents of SHIELD! Apparently the correct viewing order is AoS 16, Winter Solider, AoS 17... I'm only on episode 11 though so no spoilers please!

I very badly want Coulson's reaction to everything in the film (but especially Sitwell)

Also I want to know where Hawkeye was throughout- I get the other Avengers not being around but where on earth was Clint? I guess on another team somewhere and someone said maybe he's doing a thing related to the mid-credit scene and Age of Ultron set up? IDK

What else? Oh! I was actually just a little bit sad that it wasn't really Jenny Agutter beating Pierce & the soldiers (or whatever her character's actually called). Much as I love Natasha it was nice seeing one of the Council seemingly being awesome also JENNY AGUTTER!

I guess all that leaves is the title of the film... I loved the angst, of course I did, his face when he started to remember < /3 and the post-credits scene too it was wonderful to watch and I do love Sebastian Stan and his ridiculous face <3 I guess I wanted more though? I mean he's a title character and I feel a bit like he didn't need to be because there's clearly so much more to come?

I mean the flashback was great and it was good that they didn't just snap him out of it quickly or anything but left it complicated but I just wanted more Bucky! And more Steve thinking about him and what it all meant. I did love that moment between Sam and Steve about whether he could be saved or not and Steve's very honest answer that he wasn't sure he COULD take down Bucky.

I just want more!

(also having watched too many interviews with Sebastian Stan & Anthony Mackie I want future fic with Steve & Sam & Bucky hanging out together and other stuff *coughs*)

I was very sad to discover today that Chris Evans has said he's quitting acting after all his Marvel stuff is done- I guess if he wants to direct instead that's understandable but still sad.

Also it made me think of the fact that this Marvel run is going to end and we're probably heading for at least the halfway point if not beyond right now and then I got really depressed.

But I loved the film!

(I have no Marvel icons- this is a different Captain America with his best boy :-P)

avengers, films
