You know when you're absolutely dreading making a phonecall (with good reason or no reason at all) and you finally psyche yourself up to do it and then there's no answer?

That.

It's unfortunate that it was the first of 3 calls I have to make that I don't really want to because now I'm completely thrown. Phones are HARD (and yes, sadly they need to be calls not emails). BAH.

Whilst I'm trying to calm down again (SO RIDICULOUS god I hate being a grown up sometimes) I'm going to tick a thing that's been on my list FOREVER (well since the 15th June when I saw it!)

The Cripple of Inishmaan @ Noel Coward Theatre

It is a REALLY bad idea to leave reviews this long! Not that I don't remember the play, I do, but I suspect a lot of the detail has fled my memory. In fact the last conversation I had about this play basically boiled down to the fact that Daniel Radcliffe really did a very good job with the accent...

Which he did. But that wasn't all he did well. It's a strange play in some ways and I'm not entirely sure I liked it as a whole though I very much enjoyed it at the time and there were several great moments. What I was impressed by was that Dan's learned subtlety somewhere along the line (because bless him Order of the Phoenix Harry was not subtle). He's played the titular cripple and so his body was all twisted up but he wasn't playing that up and when tehre was a bit of ridiculous sentimentality in the middle, overplayed HUGELY, it felt weird and unnatural ebcause it was- as in it's part of the plot and it's meant to be.

I liked Sarah Greene's Helen and her egg throwing ways and I loved Aunt Kate and Aunt Eileen but I think somewhere along the way I was wanting more depth underneath some of the more broadly drawn characters? So the play was funny and almost moving and definitely kept me interested whilst I was watching but now looking back I'm not sure I could tell you what the play was about other than the bare bones of the plot (if you see what I mean- plays don't need to have a message but I want more than just straight plot)

Daniel Radcliffe's Billy had more development than any of the other characters, he had a journey and was definitely changed by the end of the play but I'm not convinced a lot of the other characters were so not only was Dan a highlight for me but so was his character more than any of the others.

Oh and I loved the set! But the play was definitely centered on Dan and he held up his end of the bargain brilliantly. I want to see him in something I actually like as a play more but I hope he keeps taking chances and never settling for the easy option.

Incidentally I am SO happy there's going to be another series of A Young Doctor's Notebook! It's an utterly bizarre little gem of a show and I was afraid it would vanish without a trace but it's comin back ♥

Right. Phonecalls.
