(no subject)

I've just sort of skipped two review posts I need to write. I will totally do them at some point but I think both of them should have been immediate reactions because now I'm overthinking and a whole review of PETER HAMILTON DYER SHOULD SING FOR ME ALWAYS is maybe not appropriate.

Anyway.

Given I'm off to the theatre again tonight (I have such high expectations of Othello, if it doesn't live up to at least some of them I may cry)(at least whatever happens it'll be better than the last NT Othello I saw)

Last night a group of us saw Book of Mormon at the Prince of Wales Theatre which, rather wonderfully, actually counts as another new theatre because with Mamma Mia on there for so long (which I never got to) this was my first time through the door. It's absolutely beautiful inside, the Stalls bar is definitely one to remember- I'd happily sit and enjoy a pre-theatre drink there another time.

Book of Mormon @ Prince of Wales

I do love a good musical and this really really was. Great big ballads, tap dancing, huge first half closer and loads of little references to other shows (particularly noticeable were the bits of music that hinted at Wicked and also Tomorrow from Annie slipping in)

Yes the subject matter did keep making me nervous but mostly because I kept half expecting it to be badly done and actually it really isn't. The whole thing is very funny but you're never laughing at the horrible situations exactly. And yes that probably was the one and only time I'll ever laugh at Female Genital Mutilation but it's really weird seeing it talk about on stage.

The cast are amazing too, really hard working with some amazing quick changes and huge dance numbers. I recognised quite a lot of the cast in the end, there were a number of Union Theatre boys amongst the Mormons including Mark Anderson who was the Prince in Once Upon a Mattress who was all elbows and enthusiasm (and looked just lovely as a girl in a blonde wig <3)

And I was a little worried that the two American imports- Gavin Creel and Jared Gertner as Elders Price and Cunningham- would stand out from the rest of the cast in a bad way but they really didn't. They were both brilliant and funny and oddly touching in places but definitely part of the company as a whole.

Oh and Chris Jarman as the General was just perfect, his face when Elder Price was trying convert him is something I will treasure.

Mostly though I'm just very easy for shows where the cast are suddenly wearing bright pink sparkly waistcoats out of nowhere... and when there's also tap dancing then I'm definitely going to enjoy it.

I feel like I ought to write more about that show but, well, the reviews have all be pretty awesome and basically fair so I feel like I've read most of the stuff I want to say so I'm going to go back to resisting the urge to spam Tumblr with pictures of pretty West End boys dressed in short sleeved shirts (dear Book of Mormon costume designers- thank you)
