I have got SO ridiculously behind on reviews :-( Two years of actually keeping up more or less and 2012 is maybe going to defeat me... though I will do my best to go back and write at least a couple of sentences about the various things I've seen at some point (which seems to be a phrase I'm using at the moment, "at some point")
ANYWAY
Last night
seiyaharris,
katie__pillar, offline friend D & I went to see Patience at the Union Theatre and as with both of the rpevious Sacha Regan all-male Gilbert & Sullivan productions I have seen it was full of joy and good music and spectacularly beautiful boys... some of whom were in dresses ♥
Patience @ Union Theatre
It's not a G&S show I know at all I'm afraid though it's really nice in some ways discovering all these songs and it is very funny (as their stuff generally is).
20 maidens are pining over Reginald, an aesthetic poet, who's in love with Patience, a milk maid, and then a bunch of dragoons show up who the maidens were promised to last year and THEN another aesthetic poet, Archibald, shows up who is also in love with Patience.
But that rubbish plot summary aside *G* Archibald really was painfully beautiful. Pretty sure D forgot to breathe when he came on stage (he later said he felt the show was entirely inappropriate for Lent *g*). He swished around in jodhpurs and a very loose shirt and it was a bit hard to look away...
But then Patience wasn't exactly unattractive (they did make a lovely pair)
Of the maidens Lady Angela looked rather spectacularly like a woman, Lady Jane was hilarious and had this wonderful song about growing old (she sort of broke my heart a bit) and then there were two others we were all basically shipping (is it slash or femslash if you're shipping two female characters played my male actors?) (so I'm basically on the way to being out as a slasher to someone at church now... yay?)
The thing is that quite apart from the crossdressing thing and the very attractive cast it's a really good production and it's sung beautifully. Some of the maidens were hitting notes I know I can't reach and with power and control and I think if they weren't so good maybe it wouldn't hold together but they ARE and it DOES.
And I am basically incapable of writing about this because I just want to flail quite a lot and tell you to GO if you like G&S at all or musicals or boys or boys dressed as girls...
Pirates was so good I wasn't sure if Iolanthe could live up to it and then I fell head over heels for Iolanthe so there was the fear that Patience would break the spell and it really didn't. If it transfers to Wilton's people should absolutely go and see it.
Iolanthe was better
