Bacchanalia

Well, I've been remiss in writing recently. I think part of it is that I've been a bit down for a few....weeks? Months? and haven't felt like doing anything except hitting snooze and ignoring responsibility. That might be too painfully honest. At any rate, this weekend when I should have been working on my paper for the Bow Tie or reading thucydides, I did other things. Well. I wrote a good chunk of my paper too, but I'm not going to bore you guys with Sulpicius Rufus unless I get a special request.

Rather, I shall share with you the fun things I did this weekend, namely go out with my temporary roommate Friday night, and then play chef for the Classics Club (sooooo super nerd alert).

Friday night I decided I finally needed to take these library books back. I just saw on the website that I can appeal the fine, but I have to have a reason. Is "I needed to keep the books for longer than four renewals--SERIOUSLY!" a good reason? I also rode my bike to campus a while back and left it there because the tires were so flat that I had a hard time riding to school and didn't fancy riding back. Since I was driving on campus anyway to take the books back, I also picked up my bike. I coerced the temp to come with me, and we then went to Haiku for sushi dinner, which was great. I had sake for the first time, and we listened to Haiku's jazz band. I didn't know that jazz went with sushi, but there you go. Anyway, we capped the night off by going to Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream, which in my mind is one of the top reasons to come to the Columbus metropolitan area. I went with a fruity rather than savory trio, and it was delicious. As we were walking from jeni's to the car, I paused across the street from the Segway store (srsly?) because when my future roommate and his wife came over for dinner the other night we were discussing where to buy specific items for Greek cooking and they suggested this place near the Segway store. So I'm squinting across the street at this Zeta place and I point it out to the temp roommate and these guys in front of us ask us what store we're looking at and I explain about the Greek store and we chat about Jeni's ice cream for a minute with this guy who looks much like Remy from Project Runway. Anyway, that was my segue into Bacchanalia.

So after Greek class last week we chatted about the plans for cooking for Bacchanalia. The guys from my Greek class and another girl I had never met and I listened to the proposed menu (stuffed tomatoes and peppers, dolmades, lemon chicken, hummus, tzatziki, greek salad, etc) and agreed I would help with the shopping (okay, they needed my car) and then we would cook at this other girl's house. Then Friday I get a call saying we can't use the other girl's house, can we cook here instead? I say yes, so Sunday morning I go get Justin after mass and we went to the grocery store where we found most things but no grape leaves. I mention the store from above, and we go by, but it doesn't open until later. So we go back to my house and get started. A smattering of other people join us, but my kitchen isn't that big, and everything is being made, essentially, one item at a time. However, we had a lot of fun, and the dinner itself was pretty fun too. It was fairly small, but there was some lively conversation, and the Drill Sargent read to us from his work in progress--a new translation of the Iliad. He read us Achilles' speech to Odysseus and the embassy from Agamemnon, and it was pretty sweet. He says he is half way done, and I am interested in the final product.

And now some Bacchanalia pics, though nothing too exciting:
