So, my review is late not because I didn't like the ep...just had a crazy weekend and am just now getting time to write it up! But, yes, I liked it, and I'm happy about that.
It was a more lighthearted ep, which I felt like we definitely needed. Plus, I love time travel. I do. It makes my head hurt (but hey, I'm a Lost fan so no surprise there) but, in general, I love the trope. And I thought it was well done here. The cross-century hunting was cool, and I liked the portrayal of the 40s, too. Dean sending Sam the letter, Sam performing the spell just in time - I liked the way it all came together.
I liked the funny one-liners too. It seems like it's been a while since I've enjoyed these moments in an SPN ep, so that was pretty good. Sam's "dirty diaper look" and Dean's “It’s called anime. And it’s an art form.” And of course, "More anime or are you strictly into dick now?” hahahhaha. I literally could not believe Sam said that and it actually took me several whole seconds to figure out what he could possibly mean. I know, blatant fanservice is blatant but…it’s called fanservice for a reason, and I mean, I’m easy like that. I liked it.
I enjoyed the 40's bits. I didn't know a whole lot about Elliot Ness, but I liked his portrayal here. Also, I pretty much died from the 1944!Dean hotness overload. The getting dressed montage...the suit...the overcoat...the HAT, um, yeah. So that was definitely a plus.
I like Sheriff Mills, too. Her and Sam reminiscing about Bobby was a touching scene, and I liked seeing Sam getting to open up to someone. Dean's conversation with Ness about why they hunt was interesting too. If nothing else, I like that it may have gotten Dean thinking about why he still hunts...not that I think hunting is always a bad thing. There's grueling aspects to the lifestyle, sure, but I think the boys may have lost sight of the good aspects of it (namely, saving people, making a difference etc.) This may turn into a longer meta just on this topic because I'm thinking about it now...so we'll see.
There were a few references to Bobby this ep - Sheriff Mills and Sam, and when the 1944 seamstress calls Dean an idjit. I don't know. I mean...I guess I'm still waiting on the resolution to Bobby's death. If the purpose of him dying at this point was to isolate the boys, and cause them to reach...some conclusion, then I'm just not seeing that yet. I guess we'll see.
So overall, I liked it. It was lighthearted, but kind of filler, so I don't have much else to say. But it was definitely a breath of fresh air needed at this point in the season. And the different elements of it really came together for me, so I enjoyed it!
