I thought the ep on the whole was pretty decent - well, except for the last few minutes, which were AMAZING, but more on that in a minute.
I don't really have any strong feelings about Garth or the MOTW. The monster was a cool, creepy concept, but the girl was totally The Ring-ish - and Sam even made a reference to The Ring in the beginning.
Garth is cool, I guess. I dunno, I guess I just have trouble getting invested in new supporting characters when I still miss the old ones a lot, lol.
I did like that Dean was calling to check up on Cas at the beginning. I'm sure they'll return to the hospital soon enough, and this is about all they can do for now. So that was good.
Ummmm, okay, so the ending?
Clearly Bobby being a ghost has been foreshadowed for a while. For one, we never saw his answer to the reaper. So presumably he could have died normally but then just not passed on, which is probably what happened. And, Dean has his flask, which is the explanation for how he's still around even after being burned.
And there's been all the little hints, the beer, the whoosh-y sounds. Now, initially I really wasn't all that hot on the idea of a ghost!Bobby. It just seemed like a cheap gimmick, and not a good idea at all.
But the moment I saw Bobby standing there...ahhhhhhhh, that all went out the window, because - BOBBYYYYY. Ahhh, I've missed him, and seeing him there like that, I was just so happy. I was a bawling mess pretty much throughout that entire convo, but I lost it when we saw him.
So right now, I'll tentatively say that I like the idea of ghost!Bobby. I still wonder where this is all going, and what the point of it is (why kill him, and Cas, and bring them back...) but right now, I'm just so happy to see him again.
The entire Sam/Dean convo leading up to it was good too. I've come to a conclusion: talks by the car are usually not good ones, with nothing really being said/resolved. Hotel room talks, on the other hand, are always really good. This was no exception.
Sam's theory was heartbreakingly realistic, I think. He was definitely on to something, as to why the boys would think Bobby was a ghost - that's how hunters just grieve. But throughout the ep, seeing Sam admit to trying to contact Bobby (what is a "talking board?" A Ouija board? If so, omg lol) and then Dean doing it, too...broke my heart. Aww, boys.
So then, the boys leave the room, but the camera stays in the room. And I KNEW we were going to see him and then we DID, and it was amazing. But then Dean realizes he's left the flask behind. For a second I thought he was just going to forget it, or actually decide to leave it.
But of course, he doesn't. He goes back in, and I swear I thought he saw Bobby (Bobby did, too) - the look in his eyes, the way he says "There you are." But then...he picks up the flask, and poor Bobby is left alone. And he flickers out, just like all the other ghosts we've seen. And yeah...ouch. That sucked to see.
And okay, I think that Bobby's been trying to contact them, but hasn't been able to. We know from Death Takes a Holiday that it's hard being a ghost - making yourself corporeal, letting people know your presence. Sam and Dean where ghosts but they sucked at it at first. Just because you hunt ghosts doesn't mean you'd be good at being one. So it makes sense that Bobby hasn't been able to contact them yet. He can do little things, but he can't make them see him. I think he's tried to, but he just hasn't been able to yet.
I have NO clue where this is going, but I'm definitely happy about it for now. I wonder how I missed all the spoilers about Jim Beaver being back - I don't really ever read spoilers, but I'm less picky about casting information, and I hadn't heard about this at all. It was an excellent surprise, though.
No new eps until April 20! But I can't wait.
