Why does Dean hunt?
Elliot Ness’ comments to Dean in the last ep got me thinking. Why are the boys hunting, anymore? It seems like they (and the audience) once knew, but I’m not so sure anymore. And the more I think about it, the more important the answer to that question seems for the series as a whole.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying. Dean worries me tremendously because I think he’s been carrying this heavy load for so long and it’s finally getting too much for him. And while Frank’s advice to him, to put on his happy face and fake it was good and all (in a not-good-at-all-kind of way), the reality is that Dean has been doing that for so long already that it’s not going to prove to be a lasting solution. I’ve wondered if this season about ‘taking everything’ from the boys so that all they’ve got is each other is a way of showing them that they really do need other people in their lives. They can’t live for the hunt or just for each other. It’s not enough, particularly, as you rightly point out, if their motive for hunting is unclear. At the moment they’re hunting for no other purpose than to keep busy so that they don’t have to think about all their own personal crappage. (well, that and Leviathans...) So I agree - they’ve got to rediscover their love for the hunt and good reasons for doing it; but I think they’ve also got to figure out that they need to have lives beyond each other.

That's a great thought. I think it'd be really great if that were in fact the case. I guess I do need them to have a more hopeful outlook on life, in general.
Of course...if they do realize they need more in life than each other, we're still left with...everyone else in their life being dead :/ But dead is never really dead on SPN, so maybe even that too will be rectified - in a way that makes it all seem worth it.
