How to make Michael more worthy? That's the hard part, isn't it? :) Well, he feels to me like he knows he can't measure up to River and is upset about it, or feels like he's out of his depth. What I think you would want is for him to admit that yes, she's out of his league, but he's dominant in his own domain. Remember that he's the Warden of Stormcage - he must be very good at his job to become that. He commands a whole army of wardens, who guard the most dangerous prisoners in the universe, and to be effective, he's got to know his job and his men, and how to control them. He might not be very flexible, but he's competent in what he does. That's what I would emphasize - remove his internal hesitations. He's confident in Stormcage, and when it comes to River, he's resigned that there's not much he can do. He doesn't need to be able to verbally spar with her for her to pick up that he's a worthy confidante.

If you're familiar with Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, I'd go in that direction. He was the director of UNIT and a great military mind, but the Doctor ran circles around him. A lot of situations had him ready to send in the troops with guns and grenades, and the Doctor would tell him no, to stop trying to solve everything with violence, then run off and solve the problem non-violently. But the Brigadier was a good man at heart and a fine commander, and he worked with the Doctor, and the Doctor respected him very highly. That's the kind of thing I'm thinking for Michael.

I like it! I did tweak a few things earlier when I fixed the spacing issue, I'll have another look later and see what more can be done. I am semi-familiar with the Brig via the Sarah Jane Adventures and various fanfics, but I might go back and see some of his classic who stuff since I need to watch more of that anyway!
