Torn between the right thing to do and the right thing for us...

We have decided to get a dog of some sorts when we move. I'm super excited about that, but super worried too.

Let me start off by saying that we ate huge supporters of the Winnipeg Humane Society. We both donate and 3 of our cats are from there.. We both want to adopt a dog versus get one from a breeder. But here's the kicker, our local rescue groups, humane society and shelters really have only 6 breeds pass through their doors. German Shepherds, Border Collies, Huskeys, Labs, Poodles and Pugs. No offense to owners of these breeds but they are either breeds I can't stand or breeds that just would not work for us. I am not about to adopt a dog that won't be happy in our home or be a good fit, just for the sake of adopting a dog.

On the other hand, I had been looking into buying from a breeder. Looking specifically at English bulldogs and Great Danes. But I'm sorry, I'm not going to pay $2000 for a dog. Especially. When there are dogs in shelters that really need a good home.

Right now, I think the best thing to do is just march down to the humane society and tell them we are looking for a med-large breed that is med/low energy that will be good with cats. It doesn't have to be super BFFs with my cats but I don't want to have to worry about my cats being dinner. Hopefully that isn't too much to ask...
