NRE: A tool of Evolution?
It would seem to make sense that evolution would favor a system that caused people to fall head over heels in lust with each other, and then 3-6 months later to be off chasing someone new. That amount of time of wild frantic coupling at every opportunity would give a good chance at a pregnancy resulting, and if not, then surely with the next one, no?
And what does it mean for any children born into such a situation? While not stable, it means there would often be someone with their mother helping to raise them. And if that person sucks at raising a family they are gone in a short time, so hopefully the damage is little.
And who knows, maybe after the NRE wears off love will remain...
