TM #175. Who is your best friend?

Apr 27, 2007 00:20

It was my brother, of course. Gawain. Who else would it be?

Not that I had no other friends. I know you all love your mental image of me sulking in the shadows like a cut-rate Hamlet, hatching evil schemes and sneering at everybody, but no. I got on fine; people liked me well enough. They just didn't come too close, and who could blame them?

Gawain had no choice in the matter, and if he'd ever wanted any, he didn't let me know it. Gawain knew all my secrets, forgave me all my sins, loved me far better than I did myself.

Never understood me. But he didn't mind that, and neither did I.

He was light to my dark; he was cool where I ran hot, and his kindness was rooted as deep as cruelty always was in me. Friend and brother, aye; king and hero, the half of my heart, the sun in my sky. I set my course by him, the one constant thing. The only thing that didn't betray me first.
