It's Been Two Weeks Already

Mono is playing in the City tonight, and I'm stuck in the Shitty Valley. I love Mono, and when I grow up I want to be as cool as their girl bassist. If I return to this area and get paid a six-figure salary, I'm giving up three hours of my life per day to commute and live in San Francisco. The alternative is to buy a car, but I'm not keen on contributing to greenhouse gases. I didn't realize that I'm an environmentalist until I came to the states. When I asked my housemates if there's recycling, they looked at me funny before answering "no" like I'm crazy. They also looked at me funny when I told them I'm going to bike to work. I remember discussing recycling with a bunch of Canadians at work... Sigh.

Everything is bigger and shittier here. Since I got paid today I thought I should buy a nice coffee cup, since I don't want to drink the excellent coffee at work until I have my own cup. (there are only styrofoam cups. not even cups with the company logo!) I went to the biggest mall in the area (gargantuan, although not as big as Burnaby's Metrotown), and I can't find a store that sells nice coffee cups! Even Waterloo Town Square has a store that carries stuff like that! The other day, I found ziplock bags that have an opening in the middle. Canadian grocery stores carry better stuff, and Zellers is superior to Target. De Anza Blvd., right next to work, has six lanes on one side and five on the other. I haven't seen too many fat Americans though, maybe because I'm at the office all the time and emaciated geeks are more common there. Death Cab and Stars are playing at the local university and when I phoned their equivalent of Turnkey they have no clue it's happening! My gcd! (the other day it hit me that gcd and gcc differ by only one character, and in a rather pathetic fashion I find that amusing)

On a happier note I bought a chunk of Cabot cheddar the other day (thanks Whole Paycheck!), and it's really quite good for the price. Also work is going fine. I'm definitely learning a lot this term. I'll always be thankful to Kevin for hiring me when I have 0 programming experience back in the day, to Gary for giving me a device-y job, and to Chris for hiring me to do kernely things when I've only done apps development. Love all around!

The weather is excellent every day except for the day it drizzled (I bring the bad weather) and I enjoy the trees. People are diligent about watering their lawns so they're actually green! Surely a rare sight in KW.

silicon valley, work
