Dinner with Urquhart

He opens the door and shoos Franz in as he stirs the fire to warm things up.

There's still a slight chill in the air even though Spring is on the way.

While Moist sees to the fire, Urquhart puts the dog's bowl down, tells him to wait for a moment, holding his attention. Then, he points at the bowl and tells him to start his dinner, which the dog gratefully does, knowing that he has been good and his humans are pleased with him.

"He's becoming very well trained."

"It's important for him to be able to restrain himself in that way," Urquhart says. "Just like waiting for my sign until he fetches something. That way, I make sure that his immediate reaction of 'want' doesn't get in the way of whatever I want him to do."

He stands, watching the dog eat.

"It's fun to work with him."

Moist nods, he'd like to help more but Urquhart's doing the kind of training that his grandfather did,

"I can see that."

"Having been a wolf for three days helps, oddly enough," Urquhart muses. "I know a bout about what it feels like, being him. And I can understand his reactions better."

"That would make it easier,"

There's a knock at the door, "That should be dinner."

"I plan on doing it again next Cubefall," Urquhart says, opening the door.

The rats come in, set up the dinner on the table, pour some white wine, and leave again.

"Maybe I'll consider being a dog,"

It would be strange but he'd be able to be with Saffron and Urquhart.

Urquhart sits at the table, smiling at the food with appreciation - it's exactly as he wanted it.

"Come, sit down," he says. "Yes, it would allow us to be a pack and bond more strongly with the dog. If we want him along on jobs, we need him incredibly fine-tuned and attentive. But I think he's clever enough for that."

Moist sits and kisses Urquhart on the lips,

"It would be good for all of us."

Urquhart kisses him back. "It would be," he says. "If we hunt together in canine shape, the dog will work with us in the same way when we're back in human shape. We really need to introduce him to Saffron soon. We don't want the dog to get jealous or see her as an interloper."

"No, that would be a shame."

"They haven't even met yet," Urquhart says.

He dishes out the fish, then raises his wine glass.

"So they should and will,"

Moist starts to eat with a smile, Saffron makes everything enjoyable.

"I hope so," Urquhart says, dipping a bit of bread into the sauce before starting on the salmon.
