Fic: ‘Surprise!’

Feb 18, 2011 03:23

Title: Surprise!
Fandom: Chronicles of Narnia (movie)
Rating: (G)
Time Period: After the Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe.
Summary: Her first birthday in Narnia.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

This particular story has been in the back of my mind for the past few days; I finally wrote it down so it wouldn’t bug me anymore!

The characters might feel ‘off’ while reading; I’ve not watched the movies in a while and this is set months after the events of the movies - I’m not sure how the characters would’ve changed!

It was written as a bit of fun and I hope it’s taken as intended.

Lucy peered through the slightly ajar door, hoping no one would come to find anything from the pantry; everyone, to her eyes, seemed to have everything they needed so, hopefully ...

“Lucy! Whatever are you doing here?”

The girl looked up to meet her sister’s gaze, exasperated with her sister’s lack of knowledge that, if Lucy was inclined to be fair, she didn’t have; at present, inclinations to be fair was the furtherest thing from Lucy’s mind. “Susan!” She hissed, and tugged her older sister into the pantry, closing the door behind her sibling. “Shh!”

“Lucy!” Susan exclaimed and pulled her arm free. “What are you doing?”

Lucy opened the door a tiny crack and pointed at it. “Can you see what’s going on out there?”

Susan sighed and looked through the crack. “A basket is being packed,” she answered and straightened. “I could’ve told you that without being pulled in here!”

Lucy rolled her eyes and sighed, full-heartedly, as though she were the most misunderstood person in the world. “Did you ask for a picnic basket?”

“No,” Susan replied, rubbing her arm. “Maybe Peter or Edmund asked. As a surprise,” she added pointedly. “May I get what I came to get?”

“You can’t leave!” Lucy’s gaze swung suddenly from peering through the crack to her sister. “People will know you’ve been here! And that I’m here!”

Susan rolled her eyes. “And you don’t think there’ll be wondering where I’ve gone if I don’t leave? I’m only,” she perused the shelves behind them for a moment and triumphantly snatched up a glass jar, “here to find this!” She showed Lucy the jar of jam.

Lucy regarded her sister for a very long moment before finally nodding. “Don’t tell anyone I’m in here, please? I really want to know what’s going on and this is the only way I’ll find out!”

“Fine,” Susan reluctantly agreed. “Don’t cause any trouble and don’t,” she scolded, “pull anyone else in here!”

Lucy’s only response was to nod and allow Susan to leave the pantry. She hadn’t long been peeking through the crack before the pantry door was pulled open; startled, she jumped back, only to bang her head on a shelf behind. “I was hoping to find you,” Mr Tumnus grinned. “It’s a lovely day. Come along!” He offered his arm.

Gingerly rubbing the back of her head, Lucy accepted his offer and let him escort her from the kitchen. “Where are we going?”

“It’s a surprise,” he replied and continued to lead the way. From the kitchen, down a corridor and then down another.

She recognised the path they were taking. “The gardens!” She exclaimed delightedly. “But,” she tilted her head to look at him, “what for?”

“A surprise!” He laughed, adjusting his scarf. They stopped in an archway that led downward. “Close your eyes and don’t open them until I say so.”

She stared at him for a moment, trying to assess his intention. He smiled. She sighed and closed her eyes. Gently, he led her down a few steps into the garden; she could smell the flowers that already bloomed. “Now you can open your eyes,” he whispered by her ear.

Her eyes opened. She gasped, covering her mouth with her hands. Before them, on the lawn, was a deep, royal blue blanket with gold trimmings along the edges. Susan and Peter sat on one side, Edmund lounged on the other. Mrs Beaver was taking food - sandwiches and cakes - and setting it on the blanket.

Peter stood. “Happy birthday Lu!” He called before striding over and scooping her into a big hug, swinging her around.

“My birthday!” She squealed.

“Did you think we’d forget, even in Narnia?” Edmund laughed as Peter set her down and Susan stood and held a gift before her.

“Happy birthday Lucy,” she added and Lucy ran to where her sister stood, hugging her before accepting the present. “We wanted to keep it a surprise so we hoped to distract you with the picnic basket in the kitchen.”

Lucy glared at her siblings and friends, trying to look annoyed but failing miserably, dissolving into a laugh. “Thank you, everyone!” She sat on the grass, present in lap. She paused a moment. “May I open my present now?”

Peter laughed and walked over, to sit beside her. “Of course, Lu.” He answered. “There’s no use in presents after food, is there?”

Edmund and Susan laughed while Mrs Beaver huffed about the food being spoiled if they waited any longer while Mr Tumnus vanished, to return moments later with his flute.
