Lights twinkle and glimmer amongst ivy climbing along and over a fence beside the table. A candle sits amongst leaves and flowers in the centre of the table. Violin music wafts from inside the restaurant. Red wine sits in glasses on the table. Light glints off the cutlery and reveals a checkered red and white tablecloth. A dozen red roses rest in a white box across one of the chairs tucked into the table.
His hand rests on the small of her back as he leads her to their table, pulls out her chair to reveal the white box. She sits, putting the box (after peeking inside) on the ground. She looks around while he sits, noting the candle, the wine and the music. She faintly smiles, casting a brief glance to the white box.
“What is it? Is there anything wrong?”
His alarm and worry is sweet and endearing but …
“This isn't us, is it?”
“Because there's not a monster trying to kill us? Or is it that everyone's safe?”
“You're a pirate who likes rum and his ship. This,” she gestures around them, “is none of that. Why can't we have that instead of all.” she holds her hands at shoulder height, “this?”
“That's not you,” he says.
She reaches for his hand. “And neither's any of this. It's not who you are, or me,” she adds. “I like to dress up and have dates, but not always to a restaurant.”
“So a burger at Granny's and a milkshake …?”
“... is fine if we're at home or going to the movies and we have that after,” she says. “But this doesn't feel like us, does it?” She smiles. “At least not to me.”
“Should we leave?”
Blonde hair falls over her face as she grins. “Since we're here ...”
He wishes he could reach his flask easily.
