While they twirl madly around the dance floor, folded card catches his eye. Admittedly, Anne and Diana had been standing there just mere seconds ago and Anne hadn't realised her dance card was missing but, now, it was his.

Which sounded awful, as though ownership was his simply because he'd found it but he can't help it; the thought keeps occurring that it was now his. He slips it into his pocket as Josie sidles over and he walks away from the table with her, glass of punch in hand. He listens to Josie while his eyes slip to the girl dancing with her friend when he drinks.

The stolen dance card feels heavy in his pocket but he doesn't care. He just wishes he'd not called her Carrots and that they could talk as easily as he does with Moody, the way she talks to Diana. The dance card makes him feel confident that could happen, that he's closer to his wish becoming truth. She'd held that card and dared to hope his name would be on it, even if she'd boasted to Diana that he would ask her.

Another mouthful of punch draws his attention to the glass in his hand, and Josie.

“What do you think, Gilbert?”

“Oh, well, I ---”

“You weren't listening to a word I said, were you? Gilbert, if I didn't know better, I'd swear you were mooning over Anne Shirley!” She lightly lays her hand on his arm. “You weren't, were you?”

He smiles. Lopsidedly; it gives him an impish look. “I was just thinking how delicious this punch is that I should have another glass of it after I dance with the prettiest girl here!”

Who was already dancing with her friend, both laughing while they spin in each other's arms.

Josie blushes and he offers his hand; they briefly stop at a table so he can place his glass there before they go to the space set aside for dancing. Josie smirks --- she knows she's dancing with the most handsome boy there --- which he ignores as he sweeps her into the dancing.
