The flames snap. The book is in her hand.
Its familiarity holds her hand. The weight of the book, the feel of it against her fingertips.
She knows it has to go and fire the quickest option. The pages would blacken and the words, the pictures would be lost, consumed by the hunger she feels in the warmth.
It would be lost.
She stands, backing away and turns, holding the book tight. She knows where it will be safe, locked away.
Surely, she thinks, it won’t hurt to hold onto this, a simple book. It only held the power it was given; no more, no less. She wouldn’t give it power; it couldn’t tempt her. But, just in case ...
The cupboard is opened, the book shelved. The cupboard is closed and she locks it, holding the key to her lips.
It won’t hurt, she tells herself, to keep it locked, safe. It’s simply there if she needs it and that book will never be needed. But, just in case...
Her hand stays on the handle, lingering, making sure the cupboard is securely locked.
Then she turns, holding the key tightly as she walks away.
