Burt doesn't pretend to understand half the things Kurt is into these days - hell, even when Kurt was just knee high he found it hard to grasp the idea of his boy wanting to host a tea party instead of playing cops and robbers; it didn't mean he hadn't tried though. He doesn't know the first thing about fashion or Broadway Musicals but he still gives his boy his total attention whenever Kurt once again tries to educate him on the subjects. Sure, he's picked up couple of things here and there but not enough to really bond with Kurt over them.
When Kurt first brought up the subject of teaching him how to cook Burt had said yes without hesitation. Burt hadn't expected he would be any good at it (everything on those cooking shows that Kurt liked to watch seemed way to complicated to Burt) but Kurt had started off with simple dishes like scrambled eggs and toast (Kurt only used the egg whites for himself) which Burt had managed to grasp fairly easily. So the cooking lessons continued and as Burt became more and more apt the lessons became less lessons and more just a thing he and Kurt could spend time doing together.
No, Burt doesn't pretend to understand some of the things Kurt likes, but he does understand his Son. Seeing the smile that had been so rare to appear - before he and Carole had transferred Kurt to Dalton that is - light up Kurt's face as another successful dish is prepared; well he knows he must be doing something right.
I'm not so sure this sounds all that right, so someone please fill this again!
