First day of the rest of my life

So...I survived my first day of first grade teaching! I wouldn't say that I feel like it was a total success because I didn't get everythign done that I had hoped to, but I also think that I had ridiculous high hopes. I tend to forget that these kids are truly still babies that need explicit and literal instruction. I failed to remember that showing them how to act on the playground, go through a lunch line, and use the restroom were going to take half the day, not to mention that the other half was going to be spent unpacking school supplies and putting them away. Was I crazy to even think that we would get anything done? I mean seriously, who was I kidding.

My students are absolute dolls! Its so hard to discipline and keep disciplining students that have precious smiles and are absolutely adorable. It would almsot be easier if they weren't so gosh darn cute. One of my boys, who came with his dad to meet the teacher, came in today with flowers. When he handed them to me he said, "These fwowus aw fwum my dad. He says you aw bootiful". Thats basically how he said it too. His "r"s don't get said too well. Then there are the kids that say they wish you were their mommy or "Mrs. Moore, you smell so good when I hug you." How can you not love your job and want to keep waking up. Though I know it is going to be sooo challenging to teach them to read when I have such a low group of kids, I know that whatever I teach them is more than what some of them are getting at home!

My day started off today with getting a Build a Bear delieverd to my room! How exciting this was. She is absolutely precious, with bows in her ears, and a school uniform on. Then she has on a backpack stuffed full with all these school supplies that you can switch out to have her carry. The best part is that she even has a voice recording that was personalized for me! Talk about a pick me up from the first day, not to mention a nice smile everytime I squeeze/hold her hand! My mentor gave me a very cute denim shirt to wear on causal days and my friend Geoff gave me a puppet frog that actually croaks when you squeeze his mouth. I even have two live frog pets for my room....It was like Christmas in the morning. Then...to top it off, I was delivered two vases of flowers. One is a beatiful arrangement and the other is a vase of my favorite flowers (star gazers). My room smells and looks amazing! How blessed I am to have so many people think of me today as I struggled through a milestone marker! So...if you are reading this and you dropped me a line or made my day special in any fashion!....thank you so very much. You all helped me to survive!

So yeah...how could a day like that be bad. It can't. Got done what I needed to get done and was out the door at 530 to come home for some dinner. Life is good. Now I have to learn to teach them to read. Wish me continued luck.
