character; Vivi Orunitia
series; Final Fantasy IX
age; THIS IS A VERY COMPLEX QUESTION. Squeenix have been pretty ??? about Vivi's actual age with various 'official' sources contradicting each other. Physically he's EITHER about four or about thirteen because he either spent about six months or about nine years with Quan. If it's okay I'm going to answer with ??? and leave a proper answer up to whoever plays Kuja since 'when the first prototype was built' affects Kuja way more than it affects Vivi.
Mentally, he's a child of about thirteen.
class; Black Mage, naturally.
special abilities; As well as being a talented black mage, Vivi has also learned how black mages work. As well as being capable of building them himself he's quick to diagnose and propose solutions for any problems he or other black mages have. The one exception is that whole 'stopping' thing which he has yet to overcome.
Also he is good at skipping and tetra master. If either's ever likely to come up.
history;
It's here!personality; The impression Vivi gives to most is that he is a very shy and quite easily intimidated child. This is an entirely accurate, if over-simple impression. He's timid, scared easily and his confidence is very easily shaken by failure and by others being unkind. He's very intelligent, especially when it comes to figuring out puzzles (well he had to be to be able to make any sense of Tetra Master, let alone enjoy it) but often thinks a little too much and always ends up second-guessing himself somewhere along the way if left to his own thoughts. He's grown worse about this due to his time away from Zidane and co., since it was his friends who brought out any self-confidence at all in him. Still, he makes a valiant effort to get along with people when her meets them whether they scare him or not.
Vivi is a curious child. He asks a lot of questions, chases knowledge wherever he thinks it might be and, if left unsupervised and not told he shouldn't, will pull all the levers and press all the buttons to see what they do. Being easily scared usually keeps his curiosity from getting him into trouble but not always, sometimes he really just has to know more than he wants to run away. Even after learning things he'd really rather not know, he's decided that he'd rather have the truth in the long run than a more comforting lie.
He's more trusting than he really should be. He genuinely wants to believe people and until they betray his trust he'll have a hard time bringing himself to doubt them. Even if he did, chances are he wouldn't be confident enough to actually call them out without encouragement.
This isn't to say, though, that he's completely helpless. He's well aware that he is very powerful and people who scare him too much or threaten his friends generally become equally aware of this very, very fast. This said, he prefers to avoid using his powers (and to avoid fighting in general) if at all possible, especially now the immediate danger to the world is gone and with people who look like him using those same powers to hurt people still fresh in so many minds.
Despite all this he is still a child. Games, cute animals and shiny things are all excellent ways to get/keep his attention.
point in canon; After Zidane's return to the Iifa Tree and the victorious return home and any fallout that followed, Vivi found himself uneasy in any city. He was never told that he was unwelcome at all but he was too worried about the politics of everything to stay in any one place for too long. A powerful black mage staying in Alexandria, which had so recently used black mages for its atrocities? Even with a new queen it would result in rumours and he didn't want Garnet to be accused of using him as a weapon. A powerful black mage staying in Lindblum, which had only recently been invaded by them? There would be people who wouldn't feel safe around him and that would cause trouble for Cid. It was this train of thought, without Zidane there to remind him that he deserved to exist, that led to him leaving for the Black Mage Village a few months after.
He remained in contact, of course, sending letters to his old friends almost every day and visiting whenever he could as the village grew quieter and every day spent there became more and more of a reminder of the fact that he had no idea how long he had left. Three months before Zidane returned, he vanished from the village and deliberately cut off contact with everyone, leaving just one letter adressed to Zidane for if he ever returned.
He left for the Desert Palace and searched every corner of it, collecting Kuja's notes and research. When he still found no answers, he decided to try to replicate himself in an attempt to understand more. Throughout the next few months, his sons would begin to populate Genome Village. He continued his attempts to learn more about himself through Kuja's old research until he finally stopped, all his questions still unanswered.
He remained stopped in the Desert Palace until the spell removed him (and it) from the world.
place of arrival; Half-buried in the desert near Figaro Castle
starter task?; I was planning to have him start out a little while before becoming un-stopped? If that's compatible with a starter task then yes but if not I'll pass~
first person sample; (Video post)
U- um...
[He fidgets, tugging on his sleeves and looking around. He's still not sure he's particularly comfortable with these 'video' things. It's like something's staring at him. After a few seconds, though. He gathers up the conviction to talk.]
...um-
[Well. 'Talk'. Give him a few seconds longer.]
I-
I'm sorry.
[He stares at his feet for a while, looking very much like a small child who's just done something very stupid. Which is appropriate enough since he is a small child, behind all the intelligence and the smell of burning, and he did do something which was really phenominally stupid.]
Um. For- -I should have told everyone where I was going and just talked to everyone and- I-
I didn't want anyone to be upset so-
-I guess I made everyone worry instead.
[His voice wavers, becoming louder and quieter as he gains and loses confidence. He adjusts his hat, almost seems about to say something and then shakes his head.]
...I won't do it again.
third person sample;
Vivi had decided that he liked fireworks. And then, a few seconds later, that he didn't like fireworks very much at all.
It was ironic, really, considering what he was built to be capable of. He wasn't entirely sure about sitting on a roof but Puck had been right about seeing everything better from way up here. And for a few seconds it was worth being so high up just to see all the colourful lights so clearly and he scanned the skies with yellow eyes, watching them.
And then there was the noise. And he whimpered and pulled his hat down over his eyes. He didn't like fireworks at all. They were far too loud.
And then, once it was quiet again, he looked up to watch and for the few seconds that they were quiet they were beautiful and he liked them again.
There was another whimper a few seconds later as a particularly loud one went off right above him. He peered up cautiously from under the brim of his hat, trying to work out if the beauty of them was really worth the noise.
