Sade.
Picked up a CD at a friends yard sale on Saturday. I friggin' love Sade.
It triggers a memory of 1997ish... I was renting a room in a house from a woman, an illustrator, it was just after I moved back to Halifax from BC. 6 months out there and back. Left S to keep tree planting and I cam home for my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary...and because I just didn't have anything to keep me in Vancouver after stolen backpacks, couch surfing and S didn;t care either way.
So I found this room for rent, I think it was $250/month. I lived there for a year... the longest 'place' I'd had up to that point. It was safe, and comfortable, and the woman I lived with made her own wine, had 3 great cats and a pretty backyard with a fish pond. It was like living with a cool aunt. A cool, single woman, who had a house,
She was dating a man named John. He was a carpenter, worked mainly on post and beam houses, was involved in the rebuilding of St George's church after the fire and spent months in the Faroe Islands for a job while I lived there. He also played drums. He had a set of those practice pad/not really drums drums kit in the basement. He used to play a Sade cassette on his walkman and drum to it.
Having a 'thing' for drummers, I have always appreciated good rhythm and beat and percussive sounds in music. Listeing to this album reminds me of that. Its a nice memory.
Getting flashes of those moments of my past when S wasn't a part of it and I was dabbling in independence and individuality, it makes me feel real.
