I've actually started reading the thing, so this is great. I have so much stuff about which to ask you. Like how closely you track what everyone can find to eat, etc. And passage of time -- I never used to keep track of that shit but I feel like it will be more important now?

And man, Buppido, am I right?? That crazy fucker!! I think I really like the concept of derro a lot.

I do like derro-- the original Shaver stories they are from are Well Cracked.

FIRST: be aware that players read this thread, so Sensitive Information should be emailed.

That said, I abstracted & made a lose system based on character/NPC actions & their rolls versus a universal DC. Food, stealth, scouting, etc. Sort of the Oregon Trail approach. With the passage of time: it's the Underdark! No sun. What matters to me is evoking the feeling of scarcity. If you have players would would appreciate ration counting, toss it in. Some people like to be the quartermaster. I think Ellen might, actually. It's not my play style, so I should stretch to accommodate her. She's the sort of player who keeps everything on a spreadsheet, I'm the kind of DM that's like "oh, wow, that sounds like a high number, great job, let's wing it!"

Okay cool, that's kind of what I was thinking too. Naw, we've never worried about food at ALL in the past, they would hate for me to suddenly start having them account for every meal or else: exhaustion! But I do think I need to remind them that they have to eat, what have you been eating for the last four days of wandering, etc. This ain't the woods, you can't just shoot a deer or snare a rabite.

I agree, keeping track of food is boring, but by the same token, if you are like, "you are FUCKED, you have no food & water & you are in the middle of the planet or something, you are so screwed, so hey, what does your character do?" & play it so that it gets across, then you've succeeded. The key is being ready to punish them if they fail, or fuck up, or don't do anything. Exhaustion is a good starting point-- I've been looking at that mechanic a lot.

Also they don't really give a fuck about Buppido; it's what I like about different groups running the same module; I have my own ideas which I am eager to tell you about, but also, different PCs will react with different NPCs. Though I'm pretty sure Stool is going to be the mascot of every party.

You know my Temple of Elemental Evil PC ended up with all of his Mushroom Baby myconid followers, so I was all about that guy.
