I used to think that Grant Morrison was the junior writer to Alan Moore, in that he's playing in the same sandbox but doing it in much the same fashion but following after him, but I'm starting to think that it's just an example of parallel evolution of ideas with Grant Morrison starting to diverge and surpass Alan Moore. WE3 is a thing Alan Moore could maybe never write and he never did get Batman right like Grant Morrison does.

That is exactly what I think. I mean-- for so long I just assumed Alan "I Wrote The Watchmen" Moore was essentially the Alpha & Omega of contemporary comics, but-- well. I guess he & Grant Morrison have a very minor feud? Based on the fact that Morrison said some disparaging remarks about The Watchmen? But here is the thing-- I sort of agree with Grant. I almost feel like Alan Moore thinks The Watchmen is the final word on capes, the story that put them in the graveyard-- which it isn't. It is A story about the twilight of the gods...but not THE story. It is an important & seminal work...but not like, the final one.
