(Good post, but I still think you misinterpreted the new mage magic system. I don't see anything unduly limiting about it. Rotes just makes things easier/safer to cast--they aren't a spellbook.)

Except they ARE. Improvised magic, by its nature & its rules, is the exception. Rotes are what you use for your character on a day to day basis. It is like a spell book where you can also cast Nahal's Reckless Dweomer.

Also, Paradox is dumb.

But you don't have to use rotes! We always get into this argument, hahaha! The only thing that makes rotes easier is like a plus 1 to ease of use and off of paradox chance or something, which reflects how magic would be, that tried and true methods are safer--people before you have worn a channel in the fields of magic. But you can mix and match and improvise anything within your spheres, using the handy dandy dots system.

Improv magic is not the exception, it's simply the part of the system that requires only one page to show you the ingredients!

Also, what a worthless book, filled with page after page of routes. Ugh. So frustrating.
