I stopped by a gas station near my house after work today to pick up some beer. I walked in and grabbed a case of Tecate and then walked up to the register to pay. While I was paying I saw the lottery tickets and decided to by tickets for tonight's Mega-Millions. I don't really ever play the lottery.
As I was walking to my car with beer and lottery tickets in hand, I realized how much that reeked of desperation. Here is this corporate peon buying beer and lottery tickets at the end of the week to help escape the reality he lives in. Beer to drown his sorrows and forget about the crummy work week. Lottery tickets are his hopes and dreams, gambling on a better future.
Maybe I just over analyzed how it looked, but that's kind of how it felt.
