300 Movie Review and other pointless things

I just went to see 300 today. XD It was interesting. Lots of yelling.

If you haven't seen a summary of the plot for 300, you should read it. And then you should watch 300, and either be awed by it or think it's stupid. Or be somewhere in between, like me.

This movie was not as bad as I expected it to be. As always, there's good and bad bits.

Good - the action sequences were excellent. I probably would buy this movie just to watch the battle sequences. The choreography, timing and pacing was done pretty well, in my opinion anyway. The gore was done alright, even if the blood sprays seemed slightly fake in quite a few of the scenes, but it's easily tolerable. The music was AWESOME. Very powerful. There were a few smartarse lines in there for humor, which is good.

Bad - sadly, there is no character development. The dialogue is mostly very simplistic and well, full of cliches. The plotline is overused but that isn't necessarily a bad thing if it's executed properly. And the elephants weren't necessary. Nor was the rhinoceroes (I think it was a rhinoceroes anyway).

Overall, it's not a bad movie really, unless you're anal retentive about character depth and script and underlying meanings.

I take pride in being the type of person who doesn't mind watching anything as long as it captures my interest in some way.

But somehow, in the end, the movie just seemed like a huge gratuitous wank of Marty Stus and Mary Sues played out on the screen. I couldn't feel anything for the characters. Their deaths weren't exactly tear-wrenching, their sacrifices or speeches weren't exactly all that empowering, and well...a few parts were so OTT (Over The Top) it was more funny than serious.

Basically, 300 is a movie with lots of people killing each other, loads of fake blood flying around, a pointless and overdone sex scene that was probably just fanservice, generous amounts of gore (yay for flying fake decapitated heads), and all in the name of justice and freedom, as the King of Sparta likes to say. Of course, the irony of it is that Spartas aren't exactly sparkling examples of humankind.

Anyway, today I finally was able to do some shopping with my parents, and I bought a nice pair of black shorts and a pinstriped jacket thing to match. And it's all the girly-girl-inside-me's fault, because it's trying to make me succumb to the vicious cycle of girly clothes shopping. Thank goodness I'm still winning (huggles my baggy jeans and baggy men's t-shirts).
