I wonder the same thing about people who consider NYC a shopping destination if they live outside of the tri-state area. Who the hell would fly to NYC just to go shopping when for the average middle class consumer you're looking at exactly the same products in pretty much the same stores. Banana Republic might be in the shadow of the empire state building but I assure you we don't have any special products only available in the city.
Then there is the high end market. Yes, there are boutiques, galleries, design stores, and other very high end shops that no, you can't find in Iowa. If you're in the market for a late De Kooning, you have to come out to the Gagosian Gallery. Saks Fifth Ave does have things you will only also find in LA, maybe Chicago, probably Paris, and yes, Tokyo. If you want a designer handbag from someone who's just making a name for themselves so you can show up all your bitchy suburban housefrau friends, you have to go to the east village.
I suspect people who do fly to Japan just might be in that category as well. The kind of people who do get a new wardrobe every season, want to look trendy, and have the money to spend. They're probably not going to blink at the price of a ticket and they don't couldn't give a shit about your little temple things unless they can buy a private tea ceremony or something.
I'm also guessing I'll be seeing a lot more of them here than you will there. The dollar is so weak if you're packing euros even walking into a boutique has to feel like going out to a sample sale.
