It's no secret that when the economy of a country starts to reach worryingly low levels as they are in Japan, that the ugly tides of nationalism grow strong and wash up and over the shores of common sense and reason. Still engaged in Ryu Murakami's book Leaving the Peninsula (
「半島を出よう」 -- the story of North Korean special forces invading Fukushima after Japan is lead to economic ruin in the very near future), I see not only just a novel, but a chilling could-be future for Japan if it does not take a good look at itself and reworks itself soon.
Governor Ishihara is just the kind of man to help lead this country into that ruin... the perfect dictator for a country teetering on the verge of a frightening cliff of insanity. In the following article, Ishihara is FORCING all students (including the deaf, blind and mentally disabled!) and teachers and staff of all Tokyo Metropolitan schools to stand and sing "Kimigayo" -- a song which has come under fire as it has militaristic overtones. An order which flies in the face of the basic freedoms outlined in the Japanese Constitution; an illegal act.
http://www.mopedronin.com/kimigayo.html Why is no one standing up to this man? As dearly as I love this country, I fear for its people. And I mean that from the bottom of my heart.
On one last note, I would like it to be known that I am not against people standing and singing their national anthem. What I stand against is the illegal action Ishihara is taking to force others to do so.
