Single Awareness Day is, in my opinion, incredibly stupid. But, I am a total sucker for romantic movies, so I’ve decided to live vicariously through fictional characters. That’s healthy, right?
So here it is. My top list of most romantic lines/scene in movies. And television. And plays. And books.
Aladdin: “Do you trust me?” This is on par with “As you wish” as one of the most romantic lines in my mind. This line is probably why Aladdin/Jasmine is my Disney OTP.
The Princess Bride: “As you wish”
Big Fish: Most people would cite the daffodil scene, but for me it’s the scene when Sandra gets the letter that Edward’s been killed in the war. When she’s hanging laundry and she sees his shadow, and the looks on both their faces when he holds her and kisses her again. I cry every time.
When Harry Met Sally: Harry’s ending speech. “I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year ’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize that you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
Becoming Jane: It’s really hard to choose just one line, but this one sticks out to me. “I am yours. Heart and soul, I am yours. Much good that is.” “Let me decide that.” This and the
dance scene Oh and “Did I do that well?” “Very.” “I wanted, just once, to do it well.” James McAvoy is so earnest in his scenes with Jane, and I just can’t help but fall in love with him. Which is HUGE for me, because usually I hate characters like that.
The Princess Diaries: (keeping with Anne Hathaway) “Why me?” “Because you saw me when I was invisible.”
Complete with foot pop. Can’t Hardly Wait: the scenes in the bathroom, particularly when they’re sitting against the tub.
Denise: Look at those shoes!
Kenny: What’s wrong with my shoes?
Denise: Is there a mission to the moon later?
Kenny: Fine, but what about your shoes?
Denise: What? What?
Kenny: Do they serve an orthopedic function?
*both take off their shoes*
Kenny: Your feet smell
Denise: They do not! *nudges him with her shoulder*
Kenny: *kisses her on the cheek*
My Big Fat Greek Wedding: “Why? Why do you love me?” “Because I came alive when I met you.”
Torchwood: Ianto: Would you go back to [your own time]? If you could?
Jack: Being here I’ve seen things I never thought I’d see. Loved people I never would have known if I had just stayed where I was. And I wouldn’t change that for the world.
Rent: “Are we a thing?”
“Darling, we’re everything.” This one is entirely dependent on the delivery for me though. And sadly here I think Wilson throws the line away, but I love Jesse's "Oh shit!! I forgot how fast you were!". A line that never fails to make me go aww is "Kiss me it's beginning to snow".
Much Ado About Nothing:
“Peace. I will stop your mouth.” Hitch: “Because that's what people do. They leap, and hope to God they can fly, because otherwise you just drop like a rock, wondering the whole way down, why in the hell did I jump? But here I am, Sarah, falling, and the only one that makes me feel like I can fly... is you.” This one has the potential to be SO corny, but because the Sarah character is so me and because of Will Smith’s delivery, it makes me cry every time.
Friends: Monica’s proposal. “You know there’s a reason why girls don’t do this!”
Harry Potter: “But what about the house elves?”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow: Could you just act like you care for a moment, please?
Oz: Would it help if I panic?
Willow: Yes! It'd be swell! Panic is something people can share in times of crisis, and everything's really scary right now, y'know? And, there are all these things you're meant to do after high school, and I was really looking forward to doing them, but now we might all just die and you're being sarcastic detachment guy-
*he kisses her*
Willow: What are you doing?
Oz: Panicking.
Aaaaand Seth Green makes appearance number 2.
Legally Blonde The Musical: Shut up. Emmett’s line in the song Legally Blonde. “If you can hear, can I just say, how much I want you to stay?”
Les Miserables: “You’re here. That’s all I need to know.” That whole song, really.
How I Met Your Mother: “You do know they were lying, right?” “No, they don’t know that they weren’t.” And then the writers forgot how to write the characters. Also Marshall and Lily’s wedding, which I just watched and it made me cry.
Charmed: I didn’t think of this one until it was on tv like a week ago. Now I am a hardcore Leo/Piper shipper, but I love the episode where John Cho plays a man who was killed on his birthday and Piper helps protect his ghost from the Chinese version of Hades. The scene where she asks him to close his eyes and puts her hand just off of his cheek, because she can’t actually touch him, and asks him to imagine he can feel her touch, is a beautiful scene. And they can’t kiss, and it’s so sad.
Falsettos: So many songs from Falsettoland, but Unlikely Lovers sticks out to me. And What Would I Do, especially “How am I to face tomorrow after being screwed out of today? Tell me what's in store. Yes, I'd beg or steal or borrow if I could hold you for one hour more.”
So the repeat offenders of Making Me Cry on this list are Anne Hathaway, Alyson Hannigan and Seth Green. VERY interesting choices, if I do say so myself. And since it’s my list, I’m gonna.
And for the record, my Top 10 OTP list (because I can’t choose a top 5)
1. Monica/Chandler (Friends)
2. Angel/Collins (Rent)
3. Beatrice/Benedick (Much Ado About Nothing)
4. Harry/Sally (When Harry Met Sally)
5. Wash/Zoe (Firefly)
6. Barney/Robin (How I Met Your Mother)
7. Jack/Ianto (Torchwood)
8. Aladdin/Jasmine (Aladdin)
9. Anastasia/Dmitri (Anastasia)
10. Felicity/Ben (American Girl)
I find it interesting that my giant fandoms (Star Wars, Harry Potter etc) don’t have any OTPs. Well I guess Torchwood counts.
