So last summer when I started at the wine shop, I started to develop a good rapport with Sue, the owner of the coffee shop in my shopping center. About a month in (I get lunch there regularly because they have the best tuna melt in the world on bread they bake fresh daily themselves, nom nom nom), Sue said if I needed a second job for the winter, she'd love to have me. Of course, already working 5 days a week and wanting to ski regularly, I passed on the chance to work for her but kept the possibility open.
Just picked up a BLT on my way in to work and mentioned our situation. Said I'd be looking around and she asked me to keep her in mind. I don't think I've ever encountered a situation where the employer asked the potential employee to keep them in mind. Usually it's the other way. So I went back into the kitchen while she made my sandwich and we spoke briefly. I'm going to go back in on Monday before work and talk in more detail. She says she wants someone who can focus on sales, not just basic food/bev service. They make their own fudge (and ship all over -- it's great, if you want some I'll hook you up) and they have a wall of merchandise with books and teapots and other little things. So it'd be making coffee, but it'd also be about marketing and sales for them, which would be great. So we'll see what she says on Monday about salary and such. The nice thing is she would definitely want me to work weekends, so I'd be able to keep my mid-week days off for skiing.
The downside is she's pretty well staffed through the end of the season, so I might only be able to do part-time at first. We'll see. But, I can stay at the wine shop part-time while we're still on a 7-day schedule because my boss will still want days off of her own to ski and spend with her daughter. And I have no problem working a couple part-time jobs if they add up to full-time hours.
I'm also going to talk to the owner of the art gallery across from the wine shop. She's got two part-time girls right now, but I think one of them is probably going to be leaving for bigger cities come this summer. She's finishing off her master's degree in Boulder, up here on weekends. If she can get a real job once she's got her degree, she'll be out of here. And I actually have gallery experience and would love to work there. So ... we'll see.
I'm totally staying positive about the whole job thing. Unlike with the hardware store, I have a month to get a new position. And if I don't, I will at least qualify for unemployment if I need to go that route. One great thing about being here in the wine shop and the shopping center in general is that I've made good contacts. In my small community, the best way to get a job is by knowing people.
Also -- found out that on the resort job I didn't get? It went to an internal applicant. From what I heard, it would have been mine otherwise. And that feels good to know I was truly a top choice. But their policy is internal applicants do get a bit of an edge and I knew that going in. I will certainly keep my eye on the job board there.
