My surgery was one week ago today. When they gave me directions on where to park and everything, she mentioned, "if there's fog. good luck finding the low level blue lights." So what was there that morning? Yup VERY DENSE FOG! yay.
Perry and I got there at about 10 to 6 (otherwise known as WAY TOO DARK (AND FOGGY) in the morning. We were the first ones in (followed closely by 2 other groups). She took my information, gave me a fancy new bracelet (yay) and we had a seat. It wasn't long after that I got called to head back. So Perry and I went to my pre-op room. I got changed into the fancy new gown (not) and socks. They requested that I remove my wedding ring (why had no one mentioned this before?) which FINALLY came off after a bit of a struggle with warm water and lots of soap.
The nurse came in to get me started on my IV. It is NOT fun to have the nurse searching all over both arms and hands trying to find a decent vein, then finding one on my right hand (of course, my dominant hand), and saying under her breath, "C'mon, c'mon get in there" as she's fighting to PUSH it in at 6:30 in the morning (of course, it probably wouldn't be fun at any other time either, but still...).
The anesthesiiologist and his assistant came in. THEY were the ones I wanted to talk with the most. I explained, begged, pleaded, threatened, whatever to impress upon them that I am a professional singer, and this is my life, and I only get one voice ever, and I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to be able to keep using this one, and requested that they be EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS when using the tube if they absolutely HAVE to, but I really hope they don't). They explained that they had 2 options: the tube or some thing that would sit at the back of my mouth and not go near my vocal cords. They would try the not-tube thing first, but could not promise it would work, but did promise to be VERY careful with the tube if they had to use it.
Nurses, anesthesiologists, and my surgeon and his assistant, were in and out of my room. My parents came in, and then shortly thereafter, they and Perry left and I was being wheeled in. Something was injected into my IV tube and that's the last thing I remember until later. ZZZZZZZZZ!
