On my way home tonight there was a deer in the middle of the road, had to swerve out of the way. I pulled up close and walked up to him, and saw the hind leg was snapped in two, bone exposed. I oriented my car to keep my headlights on him while I dialed the operator and got connected to a nearby police station. I told them I'd wait with the blinkers on and a deputy showed up shortly. He tried to spook the deer out of the road and then push it to the side, but as I expected it came down to him having to put the deer down.
I could have just drove past like everyone else, it was past 1 AM after all, but I felt I had to do something, to make sure no one else hit the deer, or might wreck trying to swerve too late, and also, so he wouldn't suffer. I just can't help but wonder if I made the right choice though, cause it was my phone call that ended the life of something beautiful.
