For Your Entertainment Review

Nov 28, 2009 00:42

Dear readers and friends,

I wish I could tell you that I hate Adam Lambert’s CD, For Your Entertainment, because I think that’s the only review you’d believe from me. I love Adam. You know I love him. Like, wanna have a million of his babies love him. Or, you know, sit down and have an actual conversation with him kind of love. Hopefully a conversation in which I do not grab his arm without permission and gush that he’s beautiful. (Whatever. I stand by what I said. Baby is gorgeous, inside and out.) Anyways, my point with this little rant was that you can trust me on this. It’s not because I love him that I love this CD. In fact, ask any one of my friends from the Groban fandom if my reviews are accurate, and they’d most likely say that if anything, I’m HARDER on the singers I love. So there. Listen up, and take heed, mah babies. Here’s the album rundown, song by song:

Music Again - This one took a little time for me to love, and it has nothing to do with the vocals and everything to do with the style. I’m all about the glam, but it felt a little contrived to me, a little too polished. No, I’ll be even more honest than that. A few guitar riffs sound straight up AC/DC and I can’t STAND AC/DC so… it took some getting used to, but I love the vocals now and I really can’t wait to see it live.

Whataya Want From Me - Could this sum up his life any more perfectly? I swear, the personal connection in this song is out of this world. It’s got Pink’s “I’m a crazy bitch and I hate myself sometimes, but love me anyways?” written all over it. Adam gets into that pretty area of his voice too, where he pushes that sweet countertenor into the upper register and lets it fly with emotion. Love this song.

Strut - What a fantastically sexy, confident song. The dances and music vid to this are going to be smokin’ hot. This song is just all kinds of sexy. The growl in Adam’s voice is enough to make anyone fan themselves, but the commanding words will make you weak in the knees. Then when you think it can’t build anymore, it leaps into this slow, reserved bridge and Adam’s voice comes soaring out of it and HOLY FUCK it’s good. Pass me a cigarette and a shot good.

Soaked - What can I say? I knew this would be amazing. It’s written by Matt Bellamy of Muse and it’s got everything that makes Muse’s music so excellent, with the addition of Adam’s voice it’s perfect. There are only two people in the whole world who could sing this song so well if we’re not counting Freddie (God rest his soul) or Jesus. Jesus might as well have sung this one. It’s that pretty and that epic. His voice floats along the orchestra like some sort of legato dream.

Sure Fire Winners - Well, every CD has to have one of these, doesn’t it? It’s one of the weakest links of the disc. Its cheesy lyrics might have flown a little better if they’d opted for a harder sound. Instead, it comes off as a Kidz Bop version of We Will Rock You. Adam’s impeccable voice works overtime to make something of it at the end, but even that can’t make me enthusiastic.

A Loaded Smile - Oh hai there, Adam’s thoughts and feelings. Lovely to see you. I read these lyrics about a million times because I didn’t get it for a long time. They seemed to contradict themselves and then it hit me like a sack of fertilizer: this song is about Drake. This is Adam being as honest as he can be to someone he cares about, but someone he’s not sure he wants to spend forever with. The vocals are out of sight. That gorgeous angels ice skating falsetto is at it again. The breakdown in the middle is a perfect dab of chaos to go hand in hand with his mixed feelings. And when it’s all over, you feel heartbroken and jilted. Thanks for that glimpse into your life, Adam.

If I Had You - I know this is one of the least favorites of other fans on this CD so I should explain a little why this one is one of my favorites. I am a closet dance music fan. Tiesto, Armin Van Buren, Cascada. Madonna’s Confessions on a Dance Floor made me want to weep for joy. And an obscure dance/pop group named Erasure is absolutely one of my favorite things on Earth, and this sounds like it’s straight out of their songbook. Shamelessly campy, self-indulgent dance. I LOVE IT.

Pick U Up - Here’s my thoughts on this song, in order. “Okay, this isn’t bad. Kind of so so. Oh, that chorus is nice. OH. Yeah, that’s good singing right there, Lambert. Damn this is catchy. Good lord, you’re going higher. Okay, I’ll go too. Mnkay, this bridge is a little weird, where are you going with it? Oh, you’re going there. No, you’re going higher. AND HIGHER. JESUS FUCKING CHRIST. DO YOU EVEN NEED TO BREATHE, LAMBERT, YOU AMAZING, OTHERWORDLY GOD OF THE HOLY VOICE? AND THERE’S AN EVEN HIGHER NOTE ON THE SAME BREATH?” *must not think. must just bow down to the glory of that magnificent instrument inside the boy’s throat*

Fever - My second choice for having Adam Lambert’s babies is Lady GaGa. Can you imagine the talented little rug rats they’d spawn? The Lady is from the same planet as the Glitter God, and these two show what a perfect world we’d have under their rule in this song. Sexy as hell lyrics, danceable beat dying for a few DJs to blow it up in a club, and a hot, sassy delivery from Lambert makes this song one of the best on the CD.

Sleepwalker - Ryan Tedder, I could just eat you up I love you so. I love your bombastic drumbeats, your vocal layering, your over-the-top drama. What you haven’t shown before is that your music could be sexy. In Adam Lambert’s hands, it would be sexy one way or another, but the lyrics to this are utterly real and angsty. The vision you paint of a man so confused by good sex is perfectly dark and tormenting. Add in the most kick ass guitar track heard on a pop song since Michael Jackson’s Who Is It and you have one fucking spectacular track. Kudos to you, Ryan Tedder. Thank you for showing us that your music isn’t just for divas. Erm. Female divas.

Aftermath - I hate this song. (Little harsh, Gretch…) Sorry. I just do. It’s cheesy and the melody is nothing I haven’t heard before. I know it means a lot to Adam because his friends wrote it, and he sings the shit out of it, hitting notes only dogs can hear at the end. But I can’t stand it. It’s the only song on the disc I flip through. It makes me want to vomit.

Broken Open - From my least favorite to what I think might be one of the most gorgeous songs I’ve ever heard. It’s icy, haunting, mysterious, bleeding, still, dark and light. The video I have in my head for this song is amazing. Snow, midnight, Adam in fur, everything crystal and frosty and white. It’s the most vulnerable song on the album, not just in the words and emotions but in Adam’s voice. He goes even farther into himself than Mad World here, and his voice and soul are there, completely exposed, waiting for judgment. Who would say no to this? I know his upbeat stuff will get the attention of the media, but I would love to see what would come of radio play for this one. I think people would actually love it. Sorry, I can’t say enough about this one. The pure emotion of it and the feelings it evokes in the arrangement and dreamy quality of it make me kind of babble. If you only get one track, make it this one. And like Mama Kath says,( yourmamakath.blogspot.com/2009/11/fye-allisons-vid-and-music-stuff.html) this one should always be played last, no matter how many bonus tracks come after.

Master Plan - Love this one for its sass and for its purpose. It could easily be a good teen anthem, like MCR’s Teenagers or Black Parade. Awesome, fun track, and great vocals (as if Adam delivers anything but) and gotta love the little “Don’t ask, don’t tell” he sneaks in there. Well played, sir.

Down The Rabbit Hole - God this song is a mind fuck. I don’t even understand it. It makes me high just listening. I think someone put drugs in this weed, guys. I’m following Adam down a hole. He sings in this weird, low, computerized voice at the end, “Who are you?” Or at least I think that’s what he’s saying. Who the fuck knows? This side will make you grow taller. When it’s over I’m happy, and so empty. So empty. Hold me, Adam.

For Your Entertainment - Sex. This song is about sex. And possibly also Adam’s career. For a full explanation, see YouTube for the vid of the AMA performance. I think the middle finger, face-to-crotch grinding, trolley stop pulling, hot bassist kissing, ninja roll says it all. And the video’s just the teeniest bit sexy. Apparently, he’s going to work us until we’re thoroughly blown and give it to us until we scream. I know it’s shocking of me to say, but I’m okay with that.

Do you best, Lambert.

Oh, you did.

And I liked it. A lot.

Great first CD, Adam. Looking forward to more. More music, more depth, more of your gorgeous voice, more of, well, YOU. This is the start of something amazing. Keep being true to yourself and you’re going to have one hell of a career.
