Birdland

Until today, I never suspected I might like jazz. But today I got more or less dragged into the jazz club here in Hamburg, Birdland, on a free jam session night. Very intersting people milling about, very nice music. Conclusion of the evening: I do like well-played, old-school jazz, especially live.

There were: three drummers playing alternately (two students and a senior, all very good), a lovely contrabass, two nice-looking and nice-playing pianists, a mediocre trumpet, a beautiful saxophon (more the sound than the look, though), and an absolutely amazing clarinet player. A drummer, the contrabass player, and a pianists always gave the background which the others took turns in accompanying, though those had their soli as well. Lovely.

Best part of the evening was witnessing the spontaneous bonding of two women over the great music: one a tarted up elderly woman with to-brightly-bleached and teased hair, and too much make-up in horribly high and pink boots and a black sheath dress (in the company of a man clad in a blue, shimmering suit *shudders*) and the other a haggard-looking woman of approximately the same age, with dirty blond hair dangling from beneath a cap, dressed in typical intellectual-alternative clothing (meaning very loose-fitting and coloured in numerous shades of mud). Teh Fun.
