I'm planning to go tonight anyway. Bit tired and a bit worried about staying awake long enough through the movie AND driving home, etc., but hey--I'm mostly feeling better and I think I'll probably be too wired to sleep anyway.
I was planning to try to grab a quick nap, but just wanted to weigh in with this thought:
The LA Times sucks. They felt compelled to publish their review with large spoiler-y picture on the front page of the Calendar section this morning.
C'mon, guys! The movie's release date is Friday, not Thursday. What do you lose by waiting a whole twenty-four freaking hours? The only people who will be going before your review would come out are the midnight movie crowd, and I GUARANTEE you that none of them are thinking, "hmmm. Perhaps I shall go to see the film, or perhaps not. I shall wait to see what the major film critics think." Most of us bought our tickets ages ago. We do not--and I say this with all due respect--give a good goddamn what you think. We will base our judgements on stuff like:
Did my favorite character get enough screen time?
Did it diverge a lot from the book? In any meaningful way?
Were there gratuitous shots of the Fields of the English Countryside?
Did something blow up that wasn't supposed to blow up?
How hilarious IS Daniel Radcliffe in a dress?
I will even bet that a fair number of people will be going, not because they expect to like the film, but because it is a chance to dress up and socialize with a lot of Snapes.
NO LOVE, LA TIMES.
