Sunday below. I think I've got the cuts sorted now.
I got up awfully, awfully early because I wanted to go to a talk at 9 AM: *HP and the Golden Red Riding Hood Robber in Boots: Fairy Tales and Fanfic*. I have a soft spot for
pre_raphaelite1 , partly because we were on the same Teacher of the Year Panel at LUMOS (she represented McGonagall), and because she is freaking brilliant, and also because she got ripped a new one by a Guardian writer about her panel "Deep in the Heart of Darkest Nox" a few years ago, and that pissed me off at the time. For crying out loud, if you don't want to read HP darkfic, then DON'T. The talk was on the way that fairy tales are used in fanfic, and often inverted in fanfic, giving them a new meaning. My notes say something about Sleeping Beauty or Briar Rose and the castle as a character. The rest of my notes are kind of incoherent. They made sense at the time. But I did find a note about the way we have most of these stories through Disney, and I *heartily agree.* That makes dealing with them problematic. Every time I teach Children's Lit, my students are stunned to discover that there is more than one version of Cinderella (Stith Thompson said there were hundreds.)
It took me a while to find some of the goodies, and then I realized some of them are on
hp_fairytales , duh. It's moved to InsaneJournal, I think.
I stayed for a bit of *The Real Hallows* and then I think I wandered off to take a nap. I'm not anywhere near as assiduous a scholar as I ought to be. This means that I also missed Melissa Anelli's *Harry J Potter has Friended You* thing, but I suppose I'll live. I bought her book.
Went to the Sunday Keynote Luncheon. One of the things about the Keynote Luncheons is that they often sell out long before you find out who's talking at them. At LUMOS, I managed to buy a ticket off a vendor who wasn't using it, so it all worked out. This time I decided what the heck, and I'm glad I did. It was on the Harry Potter Exhibition. I met up with
sinick and
ac1d6urn and by the end, everyone wanted to go see it and was dying to know where it's going next (Boston). Now I'm bugging my Mom about it--"aw, come on, Boston's practically right next to NJ!"
Next there was the Spellcast rehearsal. There were a lot of other things I could or should have gone to, but instead I went to "If You've Nothing Nice To Say," about online fandom. I loved it. I'm part of the Sims 2 fandom (my other LJ is
profbutters ) and the Sims 2 fandom can be mightily wanktastic. I'm not going into it: you kind of had to be there. There was a bit of slippage between fandom pet peeves and fanfiction community pet peeves. Some of these remind me of Sims 2 fan writing things. It's actually kind of hard to persuade people to give real concrit sometimes. It's the equivalent of asking "does this dress make my butt look big?"--you know the right answer is NOT "yes." So when someone new "begs for feedback," it's hard to know how sincere they are, or even how much feedback they can process at a time. I think there was some discussion of spoiler tags for triggers and things. Almost everyone agreed, though, that the Twilight fandom has far outclassed the Harry Potter fandom in sheer batshit crazy. I'm beginning to think that a lot of the really maniacal shippers jumped over to *Twilight,* but I'm not really sure.
I have a little star in my program next to "Remus Hearts Sirius.* Like the Snupin Meetup, this was something I'd hoped to go to and didn't. But I did go to April's roundtable on "Slash as Social Justice" the next day.
I got into the habit of grabbing a prosciutto and ricotta sandwich from Bristol Farms, and I must have done that, or wandered over to the Vendor Room, or schmoozed. I did catch some of the Wizard Fashion show and was totally blown away. Then I slammed on a mustache and went to the Prison Break Ball.
This was a blast, and the first time I've really tried dressing as a character. Most of the stuff I was wearing was my own real clothing. This is what happens when you have shaggy brown hair and enough tweed in your closet to swamp Miss Marple. (It is, however, hotter than Hades and makes me wish HP Fanon cons were somewhere a tad cooler. Like, Nome.) Also, I am broke, so I promised myself I would not try to build a real costume this time. If I couldn't do it with some makeup and stuff I already owned, I wouldn't do it at all. So I'm kind of surprised that people liked my Lupin.
However, I suck at keeping a straight face. Even if I get any good at cosplaying Lupin, I'm never going to get Angsty!Lupin down.
pern_dragon took these. What follows is not her fault.
MoonyLupin: SO. This house elf, a troll, and unicorn go into this bar. . .
I'm not sure what this one was about. Probably
droxy threatening to Avada Kevadra me if I didn't cut it out.
Oh, well. I hope I didn't throw anyone off. I'm happy with the walk I got going. I think Lupin, well. . . lopes. So hopefully I will pull something better together for next year.
I posed for a few more pics, grabbing
chibitoaster 's Slughorn and
mundungus42 's Ranger!Luna on the way. I went to bed waaaay before
pennswoods and a lot of other cool people showed up. This was partly because I was giving my werewolf paper at 10 AM the next morning. And while I'm pretty cool about giving Shakespeare papers, when I do papers at Harry Potter cons, I'm a wreck.
More about my paper and Monday later!
