Pardon me, but I'm eating some humble pie right now...

I'll admit: I complained, I bemoaned, I lamented that Matt Smith had been cast as the Doctor. He's a year older than I am (maybe a year and a half), and I did not think a 26/27 year old could pull off playing a Timelord.

However, I really enjoyed the first episode. Matt Smith has the high-energy enthusiasm that drew me to David Tennant's Doctor. Both were/are engaging and fun; they make you feel as if you are on the adventure with them. And Matt Smith is a fine actor; I think he still needs to develop his own way of playing the Doctor, since he does have such a similar energy to Tennant, but I'm pretty confident that he will.

All that being said, and while I eat my humble pie because I did like the episode, I'm not sure I quite see Matt Smith as THE DOCTOR. A fun sci-fi show that's well written and thrilling? Absolutely. I shouldn't have doubted that Steven Moffatt would give us that. But THE DOCTOR? I'm not sure yet. Since I liked the first episode, I'm definitely giving Matt Smith a try, but I'll have to see some more serious episodes to see if he has the maturity to pull off being a Timelord, THE DOCTOR.

Also, I loved Ms. Pond - Amelia, Amy. Granted, I'm waiting for her to go psycho, but she left me wanting to see more of her and not finding her annoying (...yet. but again, I'm trusting in Moffatt now since I didn't before and was taught a lesson).

I'm still not looking forward to the reappearance of River Song, for while I like Alex Kingston, I loath the Doctor with romantic love interests. It's why Rose Tyler became an annoying bint for me; in the end, I just didn't buy that the Doctor would be all sentimentally dopey for some girl. I don't know; I think I got bored with it, and/or started to feel like the Doctor and "The girl of the episode he's going to kiss" became some sort of unnecessary crutch...as if the adventure and drama isn't enough. In Doctor Who, I think the adventure and drama is plenty!

But if they feel they have to do romance in a majority of the episodes, personally, I'd really, really like a story where there are two companions who hook up during the adventuring. I'd much prefer the Doctor rolling his eyes at the sentimental dopiness than wistfully wishing he was a part of it.
