It all started roughly around eighth grade.

Kurt had been in middle school for two years already; a school just West of Lima that afforded a better education than the original school Burt had wanted to enroll his son in, but since Kurt’s mother’s death, he had started dedicating more and more of his time to the auto shop, and in recent years there had been a boost in business, and who was he to deny his only son the best education he could get? The only trouble with that was that Kurt found himself starting sixth grade amongst unfamiliar faces-none of his friends from elementary had come to this one-and having to make new friends. Throughout the entire year, he managed to befriend Mercedes Jones, who was sassy and fun, and could seriously use with some Hummel advice on what she chose to wear in the mornings. No matter what she said, there was no excuse for a leopard print sweatshirt over a zebra print shirt.

Mercedes was great, she really was. She could sing like Mariah Carey, had all the latest jams in mix CDs, and was totally okay with helping Kurt put up posters of his favorite artists on the walls. She didn’t even judge him for the Zac Efron one right over his headboard. But, Mercedes was a girl. Not that Kurt had anything against girls-he thought they smelled nice and dressed nice, and seemed to have more in common with him than most of the boys. Like that one time he’d spoken up in English class about the Sound of Music Sing-Along production that he was going to, and while most of the boys ignored him, one of the girls-with brown hair tied up in pigtails with ribbons, and bright pink braces-shrieked a little and sent him a brilliant smile.

Rachel Berry later turned out to be really annoying and critically unfashionable, but Kurt had to admit she had good taste as far as the arts were involved.

Anyway, Mercedes was a girl, and Kurt thought he really should have boy friends, because that’s what people did. Girls had girl friends and boys had boy friends. The whole point of going to school with the opposite sex was to become friends with them, too, and date them, he reminded himself, but it was still upsetting that he didn’t have a boy best friend. He spent weeks with Mercedes writing them all down in a list and scratching off the ones that were too stupid, mean, or spent classes tossing paper balls at people, and trying to find him a new best friend. They managed to narrow the list down to three possible candidates.

Candidate #1 was Finn Hudson. He was tall, and sweet, and once helped Kurt pick up his books when he accidentally knocked into an eighth grader two years ago (back when they were in sixth), and he had a very nice smile. So he started sitting nearer to Finn, and asked him to be his partner for a project, while Mercedes paired up with another girl in the class. Finn seemed easygoing enough when he agreed. Three weeks later, though, Kurt decided that he was very much not best friend material. Finn picked at his nose, and thought Zac Efron was kind of stupid, and missed most of the meetings they agreed on until Kurt had to do the project on his own. Scratched off the list.

Candidate #2 was in Kurt’s P.E. class and he was the best one at everything. While Kurt wasn’t that fond of basketball or running after each other in flag football, Liam Reese won every single time. He had short, choppy blonde hair, and the brightest green eyes ever. Mercedes said he was always drooling in math class, but Kurt didn’t care so much about that. But after Liam invited Kurt over to his house and all he wanted to do was play basketball, even when Kurt lied and said he’d hurt his arm and couldn’t toss the ball, Liam shrugged it off and told him to go play with his GameCube if he wanted to, while he kept playing basketball. Kurt called his dad to pick him up five minutes later.

The last candidate was Sam Evans. A new boy this year, who hadn’t been around in seventh year, and who reminded Kurt of a puppy a little. But he was very funny-everybody in the after-school movie watching activity he’d joined laughed at all of his jokes, and impressions. Sam totally wanted to go to Kurt’s house to watch Star Wars, because he’d insisted that it was the best movie ever and Kurt had to watch it, so they did. And it was alright; Kurt had to admit it was very interesting, although he had never really enjoyed sci-fi very much, and spent half the time wondering whether Han Solo and Leia would ever finally get together since they were clearly crazy about each other. But Sam was fun, and he liked Kurt too-he thought he was very smart, and said he always got really excited when they read their pieces of writing out loud in English, because Kurt’s were always the best.

So they became friends, as easy as that. They started hanging out more and more-turns out Sam had the coolest swimming pool ever at his house, and he wanted to learn all about cars when he introduced him to his dad as his new best friend. Of course he never stopped hanging out with Mercedes-she was his best girl, even though a lot of people teased them about spending so much time together, and Puck made kissy noises at them whenever they walked into class at the same time-as a matter of fact, Kurt introduced Mercedes and Sam to each other. By the end of the year, the three of them were spending almost every day together.

The bomb dropped during the last days of summer, in Kurt’s room while he was burning his CDs into his new laptop and Mercedes was reading a magazine on his bed behind him.

“Kurt?”

“Hmm?” he replied, starting to type out the names of the songs in his Phantom of the Opera soundtrack, pausing for a moment before clicking out and making a new playlist titled ‘Showtunes’.

“I have to tell you something.”

He started adding his favorite song selections from Wicked to it. “Yeah?” There was a pause behind him, and Kurt ejected the Phantom CD, placing it in its case and looking over his shoulder at Mercedes questioningly. “What?”

She looked up at him a little guiltily, blushing and quickly looking back down at the magazine before speaking-“I like Sam.” And silence. Kurt kept staring at her, not moving, CD case still held between his hands tightly as he watched her watch the magazine, and shook himself out of his reverie.

“What?” he said, alarmed, widening his eyes at her. “What do you mean you like Sam? Like, like-like?”

“Yes,” Mercedes returned, looking up at him again. Kurt kept staring, “Since when?”

She shrugged. “I dunno… a couple of weeks, I think.” She paused and looked back at him, to where Kurt was still frozen on the spot. “Are you mad? I know he was your best friend originally, but then it became the three of us and he’s just so cute, you know?”

The worst thing was, Kurt did know. He wasn’t blind, or stupid. He could see when a guy was good-looking just as well as he could see when a girl was. And Sam was very cute. He had the perfect blonde hair, and the greatest smile, and his really big lips were cute too. And Mercedes liked him? Kurt pressed his lips together. “Oh,” he said instead, quietly. He didn’t know what to say.

“And I think he likes me too,” Mercedes continued, fiddling with the hem of her shirt and shrugging. “Because the other day he came over to my house-when you couldn’t come because you had that dinner with your dad, remember? Friday night, as usual,” she reminded him pointedly, and Kurt couldn’t help but feel a little angry that she was reminding him it was his fault they’d been alone together or something? “-and we were watching Pirates of the Caribbean and he held my hand at one part.”

Kurt was looking away towards his bookshelf by then. He said nothing. He felt really, really angry all of a sudden, and Mercedes wasn’t saying anything else. Who did they think they were, going behind his back like that? Sam had been his best friend, and Mercedes was his best friend before him-they couldn’t just decide to be boyfriend and girlfriend and leave him out of the equation! Kurt crossed his arms over his chest, leaning back in his chair.

“You’re upset,” Mercedes sighed. Kurt said nothing. “Kurt, I’m sorry-but I really like him,” she insisted. “And if he likes me too then what if something happens between us? I just wanted to tell you first…”

Kurt let out a pointed breath and turned towards her, arms still crossed tightly over his chest. “Why don’t you go hang out with Sam if you like him so much, then?” he snapped a little at her, and turned back around in his chair towards his laptop. He stared at the screen, scrolling through his iTunes library and not really reading anything at all as he waited, waited, until Mercedes finally stood up and left, closing the door softly behind her.

It was almost comical, really, how barely a minute after she left, his phone buzzed with a new text, and he opened it to find Sam talking to him.

Scoffing, Kurt grabbed his phone and tossed it hard towards his bed, watching it bounce a little off the mattress and slide under the magazine Mercedes had been reading. He shut his laptop screen and jumped onto his bed, hugging his pillow to his chest as he tried to brush away the inexplicable tears in his eyes.

Neither Sam nor Mercedes spoke to him again for the remainder of the last week of summer.

By the time summer ended and Kurt was heading to high school at McKinley, he had decided that enough was enough. If Sam and Mercedes were going to be together and leave him behind, then he was going to be the first one to leave them behind. And the only way to do that was to get new friends. Cool friends, better friends. He begged and pleaded with his dad until he got him the brand new iPhone-“this is your birthday present for this year, got it, kid?”-The key to finding cool friends was having cool stuff, after all. Right?
