Since this has come up a few times in the past few weeks, I thought I would address it openly online.
THE PLURAL OF OCTOPUS IS OCTOPUSES, NOT OCTOPI. (even the livejournal spellcheck has underscored "octopi" and not octopuses, so there)
from Gk. oktopous "eight-footed," from okto "eight" (see eight) + pous "foot."
Octopi is from mistaken assumption that -us is the L. noun ending that takes -i in plural.
