Last night was one of the most incredible nights of my life. Not only did the most unexpected thing happen and I tied for first place at the campus DJ battle (and I won money!), but what meant so much more to me was that I got there because of the people in the crowd. The audience response during my set absolutely floored me. People were dancing for a lot of the other DJs too but I just couldn't believe it when I looked up about 4 songs into my set because Vanessa screamed out my name and everybody in the club had flooded the dance floor. At that point, being there and seeing all of that was enough for me. My friends were absolutely amazing for showing their support and dancing up a storm but I truly didn't expect everyone else would love it as much as they did. After my set, strangers, judges and the other competitors all over the club would stop me and congratulate me, asking me where else I DJed, if I wanted to DJ for/with them, etc. I was so happy my face hurt from smiling so much and I lost count on how many times I said "thank you". I didn't even care if I made it into the finals, just witnessing the enjoyment was more than enough for me. But then I did and everything came out exactly how I had wished for but didn't dare think would actually come true. I love my friends but I also absolutely loved surprising a lot of the people who had no idea what I'm capable of. Before I go I'm gonna leave you with a quote that I think encapsulates why DJing matters to me and why last night was amazing. Of course it was spoken by my favourite DJ & producer, Ellen Allien.
"A club unites people without words. Its the music that speaks. Recognizing the beauty of the world and absorbing the otherness. Home is far away and not important. Its the unknown that attracts my attention, and I want to know it! The mix is everything. I push myself to the absolute limit, sweating, and the thrill is that the room will become our room."
I'm so happy right now.
