Today was Raku day at the studio. I made 8 pieces - I think. One was an accident. I had used a mold to shape a dragon and was going to attach it to this ugly vase that I had thrown. The dragon dried so fast inside the mold that I was not able to attach it to the vase. I was going to 'Hulk Smash' the dragon and put him in a clay reclaim bucket to use again later but when I removed him from the mold he just looked so cute. I couldn't squish him. So I cut him out and fired him anyway. When it came to glazing I spent over an hour applying glaze. I made sure to do multi-tonal blues on his body and used orange/copper tones as highlights. My studio friends gave me a hard time about spending so much time on one piece, specifically when I carefully glazed each of his claws. Well guess what. He looks awesome. Happiest accident yet. Yay! Someday I'll post a picture or two and maybe explain what the heck a raku fire is but for now... sleep!
