When the snow of winter came, that is when Teal'c would journey to Crying Rock.
The brac'nor - the sacred pilgrimage - only began at the first snowfall. He, like many of his fellow Jaffa, would watch for the signs of the gods. There was the brisk wind, the chill to the air, and the gray cold sky. Every Jaffa on Chulak knew when it would come; the gods made it so. No one Jaffa, whether warrior, woman, or child could deny the power of winter as it chilled their bones. It was the time of reparation, for Jaffa to atone for their wrongdoings and disservice to the gods. It was a time where they must have faith that Apophis would bring them light and goodness once again.
Teal'c journeyed to the mountain. He wished his beloved Drey'auc good-bye and told her to warm her heart. He would return, as he always did, and he would provide for her and their future child. But the way of the brac'nor called to him now.
Atop the jagged mount, Teal'c stood tall and proud. From here, he could see the world of Apophis and for a brief moment nearly felt as he did - felt as if he were a god. He could see passed the trees, over the rivers and hills, down into the valleys. Smoke billowed from the small towns that littered the landscape below Apophis' palace. The palace might tower above the Jaffa, reminding them of their place, but it could not compare to the majesty at Crying Rock.
Teal'c breathed in the icy air. He allowed it to permeate everything within him. The cool air chilled him but did not harden his heart. The clean air instead purified him, helped chase the sins from his body, and wash away the bloodstained marks of a thousand battles from his hands.
All in the name of his...god.
As he fell to his knees, sinking into the wet snowy ground, he closed his eyes and allowed his soul to soar over Chulak.
He was free.
