Got out of work this morning and did something impromptu (and free....) I found the park- and- hiking- trails for some big rocks I've seen from the road all my life, near where I work. Big limestone pillars, with very nice views from a few developed overlooks, and some steep and unofficial paths that I probably shouldn't have investigated without anyone else around, but that was the fun part. Probably also should have put back the very small (less than 3/4" all sides) bit of calcite... but I remember where it goes. It was dry, I was wearing my comfy boots....

Big day today for my town, not really in a good way. Monday there was an accident; two men were killed when their garbage truck rolled off the road. Both were volunteer firemen, one from here and one from the next town, in the next county (near where I keep the horses; my town is just on the county line.) In addition, the one from here was County Coroner. The funerals were today, both at our only funeral home, and both companies, plus quite a lot of three counties' emergency services, are in attendance. The town will be full all afternoon, I imagine. I took a few pictures, hopefully nothing in bad taste. They had the street in front of the funeral home entirely blocked off for two blocks.

I have seen parades with poorer attendance. Someday it may be a bit humorous to think of a funeral procession led by a (clean) garbage truck and with the casket in a fire truck, and we just had two-- they split off at one corner, one bound for our cemetery and one for the next town. Not funny today, though. I was talking to a clerk when I stopped at the drugstore on the way home from the barn. She was right; the eerie thing is the silence, to the point of wanting to find the one person who was running their lawn mower and make it stop.
