Author's Notes: Second part of the formerly-untitled AU for fanfic100. Prompt 86 - "Choices". The arc, which finally has a title, is called Charity.
Dead Man's Daughter
Husband number eight, Blaise had been fond of. Fond enough, even, that the boy had bothered to learn his new stepfather’s name. It was Leonard Tompkins. He had been married to Carmina Abate Zabini Freeman Woodward Aiken Hameldon Bradford Young Tompkins for almost three months before she discovered her pregnancy, and nine months later, Bella had arrived.
Somewhere deep inside himself, Blaise allowed himself to hope that this marriage might last - and it did, for a while.
When Bella was exactly fourteen months and seven days old, husband number eight died mysteriously in a broomstick accident on his way to a business meeting. The aurors arrived, questioned Blaise’s mother, and finding nothing evidence-wise, promptly left again.
Blaise tugged on the arm of one of the aurors as he was about to leave. He said, ‘She killed him.’
The auror, tall, bald and dark-skinned, with very white teeth, sighed. ‘We can’t charge her without any concrete evidence,’ he said.
Blaise fell silent, but didn’t release the auror’s arm. After a moment, he spoke up. ‘I’m going to run away tonight,’ he said, conversationally. ‘Bella shouldn’t have to grow up like I did.’
‘The girl?’ a nod. ‘I don’t-’ he paused, rubbing his temples. ‘Dumbledore will find somewhere for you to go. Tell him that Shaklebolt sent you.’
Blaise nodded again, and took a step backwards as Auror Shaklebolt disapparated with a crack. When he and Bella met up with Professor Dumbledore the next morning, after a long flight to Hogwarts, the headmaster contemplated the situation for a moment, and then announced his master plan.
Blaise’s new guardian would be Sirius Black.
