Madeline LIKES Her New Collar!

I've never had a cat that didn't run away 'I'M FREE!' whenever their collar was taken off and have to be chased down to put a new one on.   Until now.

Today I found a local pet store that stocks Lupine brand collars, hooray! so I bought her a new one that's burgundy on pink with pink flowers.  I took the old pink one off, getting stabbed by the deteriorating plastic cover that HAD been sparkly silver, and unlike previous cats who would head for the hills or otherwise decide they had better things to do, she sat near my feet while I did a quick measure around her neck with the new one, even rubbing on it when I presented one end of it to her to smell, then watched patiently while I did the ponderous task of switching both of her tags over and then clipped it on for good.  Then she jumped up all lovey dovey in my lap!  I think the deteriorating plastic overlay on the old one must have been scratching her neck like it stabbed my fingers, and she was only too happy to have a new one!

The whole reason I went in the store was I needed her Prowl and the store had been listed on the Honest Kitchen site as stocking their products.  I didn't have high hopes, really didn't - every single other store I've been to that stocks their food only stocks the dog foods and there's no way to tell without either calling or going there.  But - THEY HAD BOTH CAT FOODS!  :D  YAYYY!!!  Saves me the $8.50 postage when ordering direct from the company!  And I got into a discussion about nutrition with the store owner, who pointed out that many foods, even premium ones like the Wellness Healthy Weight kibble she also eats, have bulk vitamins and minerals in them that aren't the most digestible form, but another food I'd considered before, Orijen, does...and he gave me a .88 pound bag FREE to try it out.  I'd considered Orijen before but with it being more expensive than what I was buying and the lack of small or free samples made me hesitant to buy any in case she didn't like it.  So I went home, gave it to her for lunch and while it took a liiittle bit of convincing via stroking her back (she's always a little hesitant with new foods) to get her to try it she decided she liked it so I went ahead and went back and got a 5.5 lb bag and the collar.  Figuring the cost of two 5.5 lb bags versus the one 8 pound bag I've been buying of the Wellness, well it is more expensive, but not much more than what I'll be saving not having to mailorder the Prowl now.  I still have 4 lbs of Wellness, but I'm keeping that in reserve in case I have to switch back some time in the next few weeks.

I also more or less decided this month I'm going to try going gluten-free and see how viable an option that is for me.  Its something I've been wanting to try for a few years since it worked so well for me when I was a kid (lost my baby weight at 12 on an allergy diet that's essentially what would be called gluten-dairy-egg-free today), but where I was there were FEW options.  Here, its considered a LIFESTYLE.  So, got some local g-f bread, flours, and a brownie mix for my birthday tomorrow (celebrated with my parents last night by going to Japanese and then Ryan Stiles' Upfront Theater where we watched some of his students doing improv comedy.  Its very cool to have a celebrity and his family that moved here and aren't recluses or primadonnas, but instead are here because they love and choose to be actively involved in the community with the rest of us.).  When I got home I tossed the whole wheat loaf I had and the whole wheat and other glutiny flours I'd brought all the way with me from the Falls.   Didn't get rid of quite all of it yet, just the stuff still in bags, nor the vital gluten.  Might do that later, tho, if I so choose.
