rethought Lucius kneeled before his Dark Lord, masked forehead nearly touching his bent knee. He had served Lord Voldemort, in his own slippery way, for decades. It had started with his final years at Hogwarts, when the entire school lived in fear of his gang of Slytherin goons. Crabbe and Goyle had followed him into the Dark Lord’s service upon graduation, willingly accepting the black brand on their forearms for fear of losing the protection and cunning that Lucius’ family afforded them.
Thin, sinewy hands touched the top of Lucius’ head, bringing him back to the ceremony already underway.
“Lucius,” the voice hissed, “you failed your master upon his disappearance so many years ago.”
He did not speak, his silence speaking the volumes of apologies for the way he had kept himself out of Azkaban by claiming to be a turncoat.
“However,” the gravelly tenor continued, “you were able to serve him by retaining your contacts in the Ministry. For this, you were brought back into the honoured realm of the Deatheaters.” The fingers retracted from Lucius’ cloaked skull. “We are proud to have released you from Azkaban to serve us yet again.”
“Thank you, my lord,” Lucius said, eyes still on the ground at his master’s feet.
Thin fingers slipped under the pureblood’s chin and raised his face so that Lucius could not escape the piercing gaze of his master. “Do not be afraid to gaze upon me. I am the one your master chose to continue his work.”
The hooked nose poked out from behind the shadows of the black cowl. The new dark lord fixed his eyes upon each of the circled Deatheaters, all of whom cowered in fear.
“I am the destroyer of Albus Dumbledore,” Snape said, voice trembling with sick delight as he raised his wand arm in righteous leadership. “I am the new Dark Lord. Bow before me!”
And all fell before him, but first among them was Lucius Malfoy, who could never forget the control that Severus Snape - his new master - held over his life.
